If various communication system manufacturers have their way, then a built-in standard for intercom systems is to be introduced for motorcycle communication. However, not all manufacturers are on board yet.
Easier installation and replacement possible
Cardo Systems, Midland, Uclear and Sygn House want to introduce a standard for communication systems. The Universal Communication Solution (UCS) standard is intended to precisely define the sizes of the devices and also the required cutouts in the helmet. This would simplify the installation, but also the exchange of communication systems in the helmet.
Advantages
A standard would have many advantages. Helmet manufacturers could prepare their helmets according to the standard, making the installation of a communication system as easy as attaching a GoPro.
User needs can change due to a variety of factors, and switching or upgrading to a new system would be as easy as can be. There would also be no need to spend a long time searching for which system meets the requirements and then best fits the helmet that has already been revised.
This would also have advantages for the system manufacturers; the development effort would be reduced and they could focus primarily on the inner values of the devices.
Speaking on behalf of the parties involved, Shachar Harari, VP Business Development at Cardo Systems, said, “This is a significant and important initiative made possible by the cooperation between well-known manufacturers in the helmet and communications industry. This alliance between the companies will enable the development of a wide range of communication systems that can be directly installed in the helmets compatible with them without further mechanical adjustments. We call on helmet manufacturers to join this initiative and adopt the ‘Universal Communication Solution’ standards in their helmets.”
Shachar adds, “This approach gives consumers the ability to easily use the system of their choice in different helmet models as needed. We encourage other brands to join us and adopt the ‘Universal Communication Solution’ industry standard.”
