For years, the development of electric motorcycles has been dominated by one key issue: charging time. BBM Motorcycles aims to alleviate this problem with its first production model, the Hiro. The start-up promises fast charging that could make everyday life much easier.
Charging times and energy concept
The Hiro has a 12.96 kWh battery, which, according to the manufacturer, can be charged to at least 80 percent in just 15 minutes at DC charging points. At particularly powerful stations, it should be possible to recharge for a range of 100 kilometers in around nine minutes. At home or at a standard Type 2 AC charging station, however, the same charging cycle takes around 78 minutes. If a conventional 220V connection is used, this process takes around two hours and forty minutes.
Performance and driving characteristics
BBM states that the electric drive has an output of 94 hp (69 kW) and a torque of 149 Nm. The maximum range is said to be around 220 kilometers in city driving. The design relies on a high operating voltage of 360 volts, which should facilitate fast charging processes. The chassis is designed to enable easy handling and is additionally equipped with systems such as traction control and adjustable recuperation. Brembo brakes and ABS are also included. According to the manufacturer, all assistance systems can be completely deactivated.
Sustainable materials and collaborations
One of the model’s distinguishing features is its bodywork made from plant-based materials. These are designed to contribute to better damping and a lower CO2 footprint. For the technical development, BBM is collaborating with the Belgian company Saroléa, which has already built electric racing machines for the Tourist Trophy. A battery monitoring system monitors each individual cell and can adjust the charging current to keep the temperature within a safe range.
Modular design and development status
The Hiro has a modular design. This principle should enable future variants to be developed with manageable effort. Founders Guillaume and Benoit Barras explain that previous electric motorcycles have often been heavy, had a short range, and required long charging times. The new model aims to reduce these disadvantages. Five prototypes are expected to be ready for final homologation by the middle of next year. Three months are then planned for ABS tuning. Series production is scheduled to begin in early 2027.
Price and availability
Interested parties can already register. A deposit of €100 (approximately $109) will secure a place for later configuration. Production is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the first deliveries planned for July 2026. The starting price is €16,900 (approximately $18,400).
