New entry in the middle class: KTM introduces the 990 DUKE
The motorcycling world has a new member to welcome to the mid-range class: the 2024 KTM 990 DUKE, which succeeds the original KTM 790 DUKE, which has sold over 25,000 units since its market launch in 2017. After the update to the KTM 890 DUKE R in 2020 and the special edition KTM 890 DUKE GP in 2021, KTM returns with an ambitious model, aiming for the top position in the mid-weight naked bike category.
On the road to perfection: construction and design
Developed and designed in Mattighofen, Austria, the KTM 990 DUKE presents itself as the lightest and sharpest option in its class, according to KTM. Visually, it borrows elements from the SUPER DUKE R and other liter-class motorcycles, but clearly communicates its own biting intentions. With a look reminiscent of an exploded view, it emphasizes its energetic charisma both when stationary and in motion, according to KTM. There are also two new color variants – Electronic Orange and Black Metallic – which celebrate the 30th anniversary of the DUKE series.
New headlight
At the front of the KTM 990 DUKE, an expressive design merges with an ultra-modern LED headlight, which stands out as the central element of the front view and is unlikely to please everyone. The innovative design ensures reliable illumination of the road. The integrated position and daytime running lights blend seamlessly into the design of the headlights, with their intensity being automatically adjusted to the lighting conditions of the surroundings by a sensor embedded in the dashboard.
As a practical feature, the KTM 990 DUKE also offers a coming home light function: after the ignition is switched off, the headlight remains active for a few seconds, which makes it easier to find your way when parking the bike in the dark and ensures additional safety on the road.
Riding dynamics and chassis
The KTM 990 DUKE relies on a lightweight but stiff trellis frame and a closed truss swingarm, combined with high-quality, adjustable WP APEX suspension components and Bridgestone S22 tires for optimum grip and handling.
At the front of the KTM 990 DUKE, the 43 mm WP APEX upside-down fork with 140 mm travel ensures precise traction and responsive feedback. The innovative split-function technology enables separate adjustment of the compression and rebound damping in the individual fork legs, which promises a finely adjustable and rider-friendly suspension setting.
At the rear, a high-quality, gas-assisted WP APEX monoshock shock absorber with a newly conceived, lighter linear spring design ensures a responsive riding experience and increased comfort. The damping is finely adjustable via a 5-click setting and, together with the option of manual preload adjustment, offers a wide range of personalization options for different riding situations.
New dimensions in frame construction
A completely new tubular steel frame increases lateral stiffness by 8% and torsional stiffness by 5%, while the swingarm has a reduced stiffness of 35%, which should improve rear wheel traction. The Gravity Die-Cast swingarm construction also enables a weight reduction of 1.5 kg.
Cutting-edge technology for the road
With a brand new EURO5+ LC8c engine (or rather a fundamentally revised version of the LC8c engine), which delivers 123 hp (90 kW, 121 hp) at 9,500 rpm and a torque of 103 Nm at 6,750 rpm, the KTM 990 DUKE aims to set new standards in its class. Compared to the engine of the 890 Duke, the increase in displacement has not resulted in much more power, which is probably due to the stricter EURO5+ regulations.
The stainless steel exhaust system has been completely redesigned to complement the increased displacement, new chassis and engine design. It supports compliance with the strict EURO5+ emission standards by enabling efficient and precise exhaust gas purification.
Long-distance comfort meets sharp lines
A 14.5-liter steel fuel tank, which is seamlessly integrated into the ergonomic lines of the motorcycle, combined with low fuel consumption of just 4.7 l / 100 km, enables ranges of up to 300 kilometers.
Connected and informed: The technology package of the KTM 990 DUKE
The KTM 990 DUKE is equipped with the latest technology, including LED lighting all round, a 5-inch TFT display and three standard riding modes with two optional additional modes. The TFT screen offers everything the rider needs, including a USB-C connection for charging devices.
A variety of driving modes for every situation
Five different riding modes, from “RAIN” to the optional “PERFORMANCE” and “TRACK” modes, offer individual setting options for every riding condition and preference. The optional “Demo Mode” function makes it possible to test all additional software functions free of charge for the first 1,500 km, meaning that certain functions such as Track Mode are only available for an additional charge. Quickshifter+ is also available as an option.
Ergonomics and comfort
The overall development goal was to create the ultimate street bike – the lightest, sharpest and most performance-oriented naked bike in the middle class, offering feedback and comfort in every situation and giving the rider full control at all times.
The new seat of the KTM 990 DUKE is designed to provide a comfortable riding experience. Compared to the KTM 890 DUKE R, the seat angle at the front has been raised by 2 degrees, which ensures a stable riding position and prevents the rider from sliding forward. The overall seat height is 825 mm. The pillion seat has also been raised by 20 mm compared to the previous model, which significantly improves visibility and comfort for the passenger.
The footrests of the KTM 990 DUKE, designed for a sporty riding experience, are made of aluminum and fitted with a rubber insert that ensures optimum grip and dampens vibrations.
The handlebars of the KTM 990 DUKE, a 760 mm wide, tapered aluminum construction, support a comfortable and upright riding position. It can be adjusted in four positions – two directly on the triple clamp and two more by turning the risers.
