BMW Motorrad is presenting a comprehensively revised version of the R 1300 R for the 2025 model year.  The sporty roadster has been redesigned in key areas – from the chassis to the electronics and equipment.  With new rider assistance systems and modernized comfort functions, the model is technologically closer to the current state of development of the BMW series.  The classic two-cylinder boxer engine remains the technical centerpiece.

Drive: Proven boxer with a powerful performance boost

At the heart of the BMW R 1300 R is an air/liquid-cooled twin-cylinder boxer engine that delivers an output of 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm.  The maximum torque is 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm.  With these values, the R 1300 R is positioned in the upper performance segment of naked bikes with boxer engines.  The engine has been tuned for revving pleasure and high pulling power while remaining true to the typical character of a BMW boxer.

Power is transmitted via a six-speed gearbox.  An automated shift assistant (ASA) is available as an option, which takes over the clutch and enables both manual and automated shifting.

Newly designed frame and further developed chassis components

One of the biggest technical innovations concerns the chassis.  For the first time in this model, BMW has opted for a so-called sheet metal shell main frame made of steel, supplemented by an aluminum rear frame.  This design is intended to offer greater rigidity and an optimized weight ratio.  A new upside-down front fork and the revised rear wheel guide with EVO Paralever are intended to enable more precise handling and improved feedback.

Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) is available as an optional extra – an electronic suspension system that adjusts damping, spring rate and load compensation in real time.  Particularly noteworthy is the option of electronically adjusting the spring rate on the telescopic fork – a first in series motorcycle construction, according to BMW.

Assistance systems: Riding Assistant with ACC and FCW

With the optional Riding Assistant, BMW Motorrad is introducing modern rider assistance systems, as previously known primarily from the automotive sector.  The assistant comprises two functions:

  • Active Cruise Control (ACC): A radar-based distance control system that automatically adapts the speed to the traffic and maintains a constant distance to the vehicle in front.
  • Front Collision Warning (FCW): Detects potential rear-end collisions and provides an acoustic and visual warning to reduce the driver’s reaction time.

Both systems are specially adapted for use on motorcycles and aim to provide greater safety and relief on longer journeys or in heavy traffic.

Electronic equipment and comfort features

BMW has also made improvements in the area of comfort.  The navigation preparation is now equipped with electric unlocking for the first time.  This allows a smartphone or navigation device to be attached via a so-called mount cradle – access is keyless at the touch of a button.  This makes everyday operation much easier.

BMW also offers several seat variants for different seat heights as well as a new luggage system.  This includes electrified side cases that can be seamlessly integrated into the design.  In conjunction with the new tank bag, BMW is also targeting touring-oriented riders.

Design, lighting and model variants

Visually, the R 1300 R remains a typical roadster with an upright riding position and sporty lines.  The new full-LED headlight with its octagonal design immediately catches the eye and characterizes the front view.  The lighting technology has also been further developed: With the optional Headlight Pro, an adaptive cornering light is available, which is designed to provide better visibility when cornering.

There are four model variants to choose from:

  • Basic version with classic equipment
  • Exclusive with elegant surfaces and design elements
  • Performance for sporty drivers
  • Option 719 Kilauea with exclusive paintwork and special equipment

Overview of standard and optional equipment

The new R 1300 R is already equipped as standard with

  • Three riding modes: “Rain”, “Road”, “Eco”
  • Engine drag torque control (MSR)
  • Lightweight wheels (over 1.4 kg lighter than the previous version)
  • ABS Pro (for optimized braking performance when leaning)
  • LED lighting technology all round

Optionally available:

  • Pro riding modes (“Dynamic” and “Dynamic Pro”) incl. riding mode preselection
  • Automated Shift Assistant (ASA)
  • Electronic chassis (DSA)
  • Headlight Pro with adaptive bend lighting
  • Riding Assistant (ACC and FCW)
  • Navigation preparation with electric unlocking
  • Wide range of BMW Motorrad accessories

Assessment

The BMW R 1300 R has been further developed in many areas for the 2025 model year.  In addition to the powerful boxer engine, the main focus is on technical innovations such as electronic chassis adjustment, assistance systems and comfort-oriented details.  It remains to be seen how the new systems will prove themselves in practice – initial ride reports and tests are still pending.
