Norton enters the mid-range bike market: TVS pushes ahead with 450cc platform

After years of consolidation and restructuring, Norton is venturing a new start under the umbrella of Indian motorcycle manufacturer TVS. The traditional British brand is not only focusing on exclusive premium models, but also plans to launch a model range in the highly competitive mid-range segment around 450 cubic centimeters. The aim is to reach a broader customer base not only in Europe but also in India.

The global trend: mid-range instead of large displacement giants

Motorcycles with medium displacement have become significantly more attractive in recent years. Models such as the Honda CB500 series or the KTM 390 series prove that bikes with less than 500 cc can also offer plenty of riding pleasure. Whether for everyday urban use, traveling, or sporty riding, modern mid-range bikes are versatile, affordable, and easy to maintain.

Royal Enfield, a British-Indian brand, has shown how heritage can be successfully combined with modern technology. The 650 twins and the new Himalayan 450 set new standards in terms of value for money. This is exactly where TVS and Norton want to come in.

 

The technical basis: BMW engine for many brands

At the heart of the new strategy is a 450 cc parallel twin engine developed jointly by BMW and TVS. The engine was first unveiled at EICMA 2024 in the BMW F 450 GS. With an expected output of around 40 kW (54 hp) at approximately 9,000 rpm and a torque of around 45 Nm, the engine is said to offer an ideal balance of performance, weight, and efficiency.

This platform will not only be used in future models such as the Apache RR 450 from TVS or a BMW F 450 R, but will also form the heart of the new Norton generation. This gives the British brand a modern, modular foundation that can be used for different applications and designs.

 

Outlook: Premium meets everyday practicality

The first new Norton models are set to hit the Indian market before the end of 2025. The clear aim is to position the brand as an accessible but high-quality alternative to market leaders such as Royal Enfield. TVS not only brings large manufacturing capacities to the table, but also extensive development resources from its cooperation with BMW.

What makes the project particularly exciting is that Norton wants to deliver not only motorcycles with good performance data, but also machines with character. Models that are light, versatile, and yet emotional. Motorcycles that can handle everyday life as well as put a smile on your face on weekend rides.

 

Conclusion

Norton’s entry into the mid-range segment could prove to be a milestone for the brand. Thanks to modern technology, solid partnerships, and a clear vision, Norton has the potential under TVS to advance from a niche manufacturer to a serious global player.
