KTM tests new 850cc MotoGP engine in Jerez

KTM tested its new 850cc engine for the MotoGP era starting in 2027 on the race track in Jerez for the first time. The first laps mark an important step toward the upcoming regulations, which will bring about profound technical changes.
  • First publicly known 850cc MotoGP testing by KTM
  • Private test with Pol Espargaro and Dani Pedrosa at the Circuito de Jerez
  • New engine sounds significantly different from current 1000cc units

The test drives are considered the technical kick-off for the future MotoGP generation, which, in addition to reducing displacement, will also bring restrictions on aerodynamic elements and chassis devices to make overtaking easier and increase safety.

First rollout laps with the 850cc engine

KTM brought the new engine to Jerez for private testing on December 4, making it the first manufacturer to put a roadworthy 850cc engine on the track. Pol Espargaro and Dani Pedrosa took care of the first few kilometers. Both had already accompanied countless hours of testing on the engine.

A short video from Jerez shows the machine on the start-finish straight. The sound is significantly different from the 1000cc engines of the current generation. KTM did not provide any further technical details, but winglets in a black carbon look were visible. According to KTM, the new engine base will set the development direction until the start of the 2027 season.

Test conditions

The test phase is possible because the ban on testing the new 850cc engines was lifted on November 17. Previously, manufacturers were only allowed to run their engines on the test bench. Since the Valencia test officially kicked off the 2026 season, KTM is not in breach of the agreement between the manufacturers that no 850cc rides should take place during the 2025 season.

The number of laps completed by Espargaro and Pedrosa was not disclosed. The manufacturer is also keeping quiet about alternative test programs. However, additional aerodynamic components were visible on the motorcycle, which were apparently still unpainted.

A signal for the future of MotoGP

The test in Jerez is seen as a clear commitment by KTM to the new regulations and to continuing its involvement in MotoGP. In recent months, economic difficulties had led to speculation about a possible withdrawal. The early rollout of the 850cc prototype contradicts these assumptions.

The changes from 2027 are among the most extensive in the history of MotoGP. In addition to the reduction in displacement to 850cc, ride height devices will be banned and aerodynamics reduced. Furthermore, Pirelli will take over the role of sole tire supplier from 2027.

Focus on the riders

Pol Espargaro commented on the test via social media, writing: “Can you hear that? The future has been launched. Our 850cc engine is alive and ready to race in 2027.” Dani Pedrosa did not share any details, but also took part in the test program. While the testers were working in Jerez, Pedro Acosta trained independently on a 600cc Supersport motorcycle.

Outlook

It remains to be seen when KTM will take the next step in the test program. However, given the ambitious regulations, the next phase of development is unlikely to be long in coming. Initial impressions from Jerez show that implementation of the future regulations has begun and that KTM is actively working on the technical realignment of MotoGP.
