- 162,009 newly registered motorcycles in 2025
- Decline of 35.5 percent compared to 2024
- December 2025 with extremely weak results
After an already subdued performance over the course of the year, December 2025 once again confirmed the negative trend on the motorcycle market. The latest figures clearly show that motorcycles, including 125cc motorcycles and scooters, experienced a noticeable decline in demand last year.
New motorcycle registrations in December 2025
In December 2025, only 4,505 motorcycles were newly registered in Germany. Compared to the previous month, this represented a decline of 24.7 percent. The comparison with December 2024 is even more striking, with a decline of 85.8 percent. The last month of the year was therefore exceptionally weak, confirming the downward trend that had already been apparent.
Seasonal effects traditionally play a role in the motorcycle market. However, the extent of the decline indicates that weather and seasonal effects alone were not the decisive factors.
2025 annual balance sheet Motorcycle market significantly below previous year
A total of 162,009 motorcycles were newly registered throughout 2025. Compared to the previous year, this represents a decline of 35.5 percent. The motorcycle market thus performed significantly weaker than the overall vehicle market, which recorded a decline of 2.4 percent in 2025.
The figures summarize all motorcycles. Separate figures for 125cc motorcycles or scooters are not available in the data provided. However, based on the market structure, it can be assumed that these segments were also affected by the general market development.
Used market with more stable development
While new registrations declined significantly, the used market proved to be more robust. In 2025, a total of 492,599 motorcycles changed hands. This corresponded to an increase of 5.1 percent over the previous year.
In December 2025, 13,585 transfers of ownership were registered for motorcycles. Although this figure was 27.4 percent below the previous month, it represented an increase of 9.8 percent compared to December 2024. The used market was thus able to offset some of the weak new registrations.
Classification for 125cc motorcycles and scooters
Even though the statistics do not show separate figures for light motorcycles and scooters, these segments are traditionally considered to be strongly volume-driven and price-sensitive. The significant decline in total motorcycle registrations suggests that entry-level vehicles and urban mobility solutions such as scooters in particular are likely to have suffered from the current market situation.
This development contrasts with the used market, which continued to see demand. This could indicate that many buyers have increasingly turned to used vehicles.
Outlook
Looking ahead to 2026, it remains to be seen whether the motorcycle market can stabilize. The strong dependence on seasonal factors and the overall subdued demand in 2025 suggest that the new season will start cautiously, at least.
