Software problem: Recall and sales stop for some Honda Africa Twin models

Honda has announced a recall in the USA for certain Africa Twin models from the 2022, 2024 and 2025 model years.  The reason for this is a software problem in the Fuel Injection Electronic Control Unit (FI-ECU), which can lead to engine hesitation or unclean acceleration under certain circumstances.  This could increase the risk of an accident.

Affected models and production period

According to Honda, approximately 4,205 motorcycles are affected by the recall, which is about one percent of the total production of these models.  The affected production periods are:

  • 2022 Africa Twin: produced between September 22, 2021 and July 21, 2022.
  • 2024 and 2025 Africa Twin: produced between February 9, 2024 and October 11, 2024.

Cause of the problem

The problem is due to incorrect software programming of the FI-ECU.  This software can calculate incorrect traction control settings in specific riding situations, especially when wheelie control is active.  According to Honda, this is due to the fact that the original software was adopted from another model without carrying out the necessary adjustments and tests for the Africa Twin.

The software was developed by Hitachi Astemo, a major automotive supplier resulting from the 2021 merger of Nissin, Keihin, Showa and Hitachi.

Course of the investigation

Honda began investigating the issue in May 2023.  As early as December 2023, a product update for the FI-ECU software was launched for some Africa Twin models from 2022, but was initially not classified as safety-relevant.

In the course of further investigations, Honda determined in November 2024 that the problem did pose a safety risk and initiated the recall.  Models produced after November 14, 2024 are not affected, as Hitachi Astemo has updated the software by then.

Measures and repairs

Honda informed its dealers of the problem on November 15, 2024 and will notify owners of the affected motorcycles in writing from January 20, 2025.  The repair includes a software update for the FI-ECU, which can be carried out free of charge at authorized Honda dealers.

Owners who have already had this repair carried out before the recall can apply for a refund, provided they have the relevant proof.

In addition, Honda has issued a service instruction which, in addition to the repair manual, also provides for a sales stop for affected new and used models until they have been updated.

Contact information

Owners with questions about the recall can contact American Honda at 1-866-784-1870 and reference the KR1 recall campaign.  Alternatively, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can be reached at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9154) or via www.nhtsa.gov.

Conclusion

With this recall, Honda is responding to a potential safety risk while demonstrating transparency in its communications with customers.  Affected owners should have the repair carried out as soon as possible in order to restore the safety and functionality of their motorcycles.
