Kawasaki recalls hybrid models Ninja 7 and Z7 again

In 2024, Kawasaki has launched two recalls with the hybrid models Ninja 7 Hybrid ABS and Z7 Hybrid ABS.  The first recall in September related to a problem with the ECU (engine control unit), while the second recall in November concerns a completely different problem.  The recall originated in the US.  However, as motorcycles are usually manufactured in one factory for worldwide sale, other markets could also be affected.

Background: Welding problem discovered on the frame

The current recall involves a faulty welded connection between the steering head and the frame.  This improperly executed weld seam can develop cracks, which could have a negative impact on the stability and handling of the motorcycle.  This increases the risk of a loss of control and consequently a possible accident.

Around 299 vehicles of both models are affected, which corresponds to approximately one percent of the units produced.  The affected motorcycles were manufactured between March 5, 2024 and April 1, 2024.  The affected VINs (vehicle identification numbers) are in the following ranges

  • ML5CXGA17RDA02646 to ML5CXGA14RDA03172
  • ML5CRGA12RDA02449 to ML5CRGA12RDA03438

The problem relates exclusively to parts and work carried out by Kawasaki Motors Limited itself.  External suppliers are not involved.

Consequences: Stop sale and stop ride instruction

On November 7, 2024, Kawasaki Motors Corporation USA instructed all dealers to stop selling the affected motorcycles and to no longer register any of these vehicles.  Owners were also asked not to ride their motorcycles until further notice.

An official repair process is expected by the end of November, according to Kawasaki.  Owners will receive a second notification with exact details once the repair plan is available.

Actions for affected owners (applies to the Americas)

  • Contact customer support: Owners may contact Kawasaki Customer Support (Phone: 866-802-9381, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. PST). The VIN will be required to discuss the issue.
  • Contact NHTSA: Alternatively, concerned parties may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) (phone: 1-888-327-4236 or TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.

Technical details at a glance:

  • Affected models: Ninja 7 Hybrid ABS, Z7 Hybrid ABS (2024)
  • Production: March 5 to April 1, 2024
  • VIN ranges: ML5CXGA17RDA02646 to ML5CXGA14RDA03172 and ML5CRGA12RDA02449 to ML5CRGA12RDA03438
  • Fault: Incorrect welded connection on the steering head
  • Measures: Stop-sale, stop-ride, repair expected by end of November
  • Number of vehicles affected: 299
