- The G310 models are to be replaced by a new 450 platform.
- Models are developed in Germany and produced in collaboration with TVS.
- Automation solutions such as Easy Ride Clutch are to be used across all series.
With the introduction of the F450GS, BMW Motorrad is embarking on a far-reaching realignment in the lower displacement segment. The new two-cylinder engine is set to replace machines that were previously powered by single-cylinder engines. Statements from management indicate that several offshoots are planned, which will gradually replace the existing G310 family portfolio.

Information from company management
BMW Motorrad has confirmed that the 310 models will be discontinued. The new 450 platform forms the basis for the successor models, which will be classified in the A2 category in future. They are being developed in Germany and manufactured in collaboration with TVS in India. According to Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW Motorrad, the new engine opens up a wide range of possibilities for additional variants. He explained: “We are not yet ready to announce details, but the 450 is the successor to the 310.” He added that the current 310 model range gives an indication of which offshoots could follow on the 450 basis in the future.

Expected model variants and technical orientation
The transition has already begun with the F450GS. Next, a naked 450cc model is set to replace the G310R. In addition, India has the fully faired G310RR, which is based on the TVS Apache RR310. Given the growing demand for sports models, a corresponding 450cc option could become relevant for European markets. It would compete with machines such as the Yamaha R3, Aprilia RS457, and Honda CBR500R.
The future 450cc offshoots are expected to feature a steel frame layout with an aluminum swing arm, similar to the F450GS. The concept is based on the previous strategy for the 310 series. Differences are expected in suspension travel and wheel sizes. A 19-inch front wheel was chosen for the F450GS, which, according to customer and developer feedback, offers the best compromise between road and off-road capability. The decision is also intended to standardize the chassis within the platform. A 21-inch front wheel, as used on the F900GS, was therefore not planned.
Electronic support through automated transmission technology
The new platform is also intended to bring assistance systems more strongly into the A2 segment. BMW plans to use its automated shifting technologies across the entire 450 family. According to Flasch, the high popularity of the automatic shifting assistant ASA underscores the benefits of such systems: “The acceptance of ASA is extremely high – our riders tell us that it helps them concentrate better and takes some of the strain off their brains.”
The F450GS relies on the ERC Easy Ride Clutch system. This enables starting without clutch operation. Flasch described it as “simpler than ASA and more cost-effective, making it perfect for the A2 segment.” This makes it particularly suitable for drivers in the entry-level and mid-range segments.

Outlook
The replacement of the G310 series with several 450 models is already underway. A gradual expansion of the model range is expected, but no concrete announcements have been made yet. Indications from management suggest that BMW intends to restructure its A2 range and offer several model categories based on the new two-cylinder engine.
