EICMA 2024: What to expect at the world’s largest motorcycle trade fair

This year, EICMA, the most important international motorcycle trade fair, will take place in Milan from November 7 to 10.  With its 110th anniversary and over 2100 brands from 45 countries, it will once again be the center of the motorcycle world.  The trade fair is important for manufacturers and fans alike, although a lot has changed in recent years.  Physical trade fairs seem to be losing importance, particularly due to the increasing number of online presentations – and yet EICMA remains a must-attend event for motorcycle enthusiasts.

A historical review and current expectations

EICMA opens its doors on November 5, with the first day traditionally reserved for the press and the second for trade visitors.  The actual trade fair then begins for the general public on November 7.  Last year, over 560,000 visitors flocked to Milan to experience the latest developments in the motorcycle industry.  It will be particularly exciting to see which models the manufacturers will be presenting this year and which trends are emerging for 2025.

Why EICMA is still relevant

In recent years, the way in which new motorcycles are presented has changed dramatically.  Due to the pandemic, many manufacturers have discovered the advantages of online presentations, as individual models do not get lost in the competition of other new products.  Nevertheless, EICMA remains an important showcase, especially for prototypes and models being shown to the public for the first time.  Even if some manufacturers present fewer models directly at the trade fair, it remains a crucial place for many to experience the most important new products live.

Manufacturer highlights

BMW: A design update for the S 1000 R?

At BMW, there are rumors that the S 1000 R will receive a design update.  The front is to become more aggressive, but without an increase in performance.  The four-cylinder engine will continue to deliver 165 hp (121 kW) at 11,000 rpm, with a maximum torque of 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm.  A new version of the R1250RT with the engine from the new GS is also being discussed, possibly as the R1300RT.  The presentation of the R20 Power Cruiser, a more aggressive version of the R18 with a 2-liter engine and around 100 hp (74 kW), could also take place at the trade fair.

Aprilia: New models on the 457 platform

Aprilia could further expand the new 457 platform.  Following the introduction of the RS 457 with 47 hp (35 kW), there is speculation about a smaller version of the Tuareg 660, which could possibly be an alternative to the KTM 390 Adventure or BMW G310GS.  A retro bike could also appear on this platform, possibly even under the Moto Guzzi label, as both brands belong to the Piaggio Group.

Ducati: Continuation of the world premiere

Ducati continues to rely on its own World Premiere series, in which it presents models online spread over several weeks.  Among the models already unveiled are the Panigale V4 and the Scrambler 10° Anniversario Rizoma Edition.  The Panigale V2 is the focus of speculation – a successor model is expected, with a completely new engine being used.

KTM: Comeback after a five-year break

After a five-year absence, KTM is returning to the EICMA with a large line-up.  Particular attention will be paid to the 1390 Super Adventure S Evo and the new 990 Duke R for 2025.  The 1390 Duke GT will also be unveiled on the press day of the trade fair.  Although many models have already been unveiled in advance, it remains to be seen whether KTM can use the comeback to avert the negative trend.

Yamaha: Discussions about the new R9

The introduction of the Yamaha R9, which was announced for 2025, has triggered mixed reactions.  As the successor to the R6 in World Supersport, it is causing heated debates.  While some fans feel that the performance is sufficient for road racing, others do not see the R9 as an adequate replacement for the R6.

Honda: Speculation about a new CBR 750 R

Honda could surprise us with a sporty CBR 750 R that uses the 750cc parallel twin from the Hornet and Transalp and is positioned as a competitor to the Yamaha R7 and Aprilia RS660.  A retro version or a new scrambler model could also appear on the platform.  There is also speculation about a new CBR400R, possibly equipped with a four-cylinder engine.

CFMoto: Surprising new launches

CFMoto has already unveiled three new models that will be on show at the EICMA, including the 500SR VOOM and the 675 SR R, an aggressive supersports bike that could compete with the Triumph Daytona 675R.  An adventure bike, the 800 MTX, inspired by the KTM 790 Adventure, is also expected.

Other manufacturers at a glance

Harley-Davidson is also returning to the EICMA after a five-year absence.  However, rumors suggest that the focus could be on a brand experience rather than new models.  Triumph has already unveiled several models in advance, including the TF450RC motocross bike and the Speed Twin 900 for 2025.

MV Agusta plans to captivate visitors with new models, although it is still unclear whether completely new motorcycles will actually be presented or whether well-known models will be presented in special editions.  Kawasaki will possibly present a new hybrid bike with a 451cc parallel twin and electric motor, which should provide more efficiency and better acceleration.

Conclusion: The EICMA remains exciting

Despite the increasing number of online presentations, EICMA remains a highlight of the year for motorcycle fans.  It offers the opportunity to experience new models up close and personal, and we can hope for a few surprises this year too.  Whether prototypes, design updates or completely new models – EICMA will once again prove why it is the most important motorcycle trade fair in the world.
