Harley-Davidson Softail recall 0188 affects over 82,000 motorcycles

Harley-Davidson is inspecting numerous Softail models worldwide because a component weakness in the rear shock absorber is believed to be a safety issue. Recall 0188 covers models from the 2017 to 2024 model years.
  • 82,117 Softail models affected worldwide
  • Risk of component failure on rear shock absorber
  • Replacement of mounting kit free of charge at dealer

Harley-Davidson is currently investigating potential problems with the rear suspension on various Softail models. The internal measure is designated 0188 and is intended to ensure that a retaining component on the shock absorber does not fail.

Reference to previous measure

Some of the affected motorcycles were already included in the previous recall 0181 (NHTSA 23V-591). That recall also concerned the mounting of the adjuster. According to the current status, the new measure does not rule out the possibility that machines may be affected again. It is therefore still necessary to check the chassis number.

Overview of models

The following Softail variants are listed in the official documents for recall 0188. These include both series models and limited special editions:

  • FLDE Softail Deluxe, model years 2018 to 2019
  • FLHC Heritage Classic, model years 2018 to 2021
  • FLHCS Heritage Classic 114, also known as 114S depending on the market, model years 2018 to 2024
  • FLHCS ANV Heritage Classic 114 Anniversary, anniversary models 2018 and 2023
  • FXLRS Low Rider S, model years 2020 to 2024
  • FXLRST Low Rider ST, model years 2022 to 2024
  • FXRST Low Rider El Diablo, model year 2022

Measures in the workshop

As a technical remedy, a revised mounting kit with reinforced bracket will be installed. The new design limits the adjustability of the adjuster and is intended to ensure that there is no contact with the rear tire. The scope of work is estimated at approximately twenty minutes, plus organizational procedures for acceptance and documentation. There will be no cost to the rider.

Why the VIN check is crucial

Participation in previous recall campaigns does not guarantee that all relevant components have already been updated. The dealer can use the chassis number to check whether a motorcycle is part of campaign 0188 and whether the new bracket has been installed. A quick appointment is all it takes to check the status and carry out the measure if necessary.
