Ducati recall: Panigale V4 and Streetfighter V4 receive new rear axle

Ducati is currently conducting a worldwide recall for all Panigale V4 and Streetfighter V4 models with single-sided swingarms. All models built between 2018 and 2025 are affected – essentially all models since the introduction of these series. The reason for the recall is the rear axle, which is being replaced with a new version as a precautionary measure. Around 7,000 vehicles are affected in Germany and more than 10,000 in the USA.

A broken axle as the trigger

The reason for this measure is an incident in September 2023 in which a rear wheel axle is said to have broken. According to reports, the damage manifested itself in unusually loud noises while driving. There was no accident or loss of the rear wheel. Nevertheless, Ducati initiated a more detailed investigation.

Both used and new axles were examined as part of the analysis. No clear cause for the breakage could be determined. According to documents from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a combination of several factors could be responsible – such as mileage, maintenance condition, and correctly observed tightening torques when changing wheels and chains or adjusting chain slack.

Scope of the recall

The following models are affected by the recall:

  • Ducati Panigale V4 (model years 2018 to 2024)
  • Ducati Streetfighter V4 (model years 2020 to 2025)
  • Also included: Panigale V4 R and V4 Superleggera

Only models with a single-sided swing arm are affected. Vehicles with a double-sided swingarm, such as those installed in certain variants of the more recent model years, are not covered by the recall.

In Canada, it has also been reported that not only the axle but also the axle bearings and thus the entire hub will be replaced. Replacing the hub would involve considerably more effort and expense.

Implementation and costs

Ducati has begun to inform owners of the affected models directly – via app or postal notification. The replacement will only be carried out by authorized dealers and is free of charge for customers.

According to current information, the rear axle costs around 150 euros (approx. 160 US dollars). If the hub is also affected in individual cases, this would cost an additional 630 euros (approx. 670 US dollars), excluding labor costs for removal and installation. For Ducati, the recall therefore represents a considerable financial expense.

In Germany, the recall is currently being implemented directly by Ducati. It has not yet been officially listed by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

Summary

The worldwide recall of the Ducati Panigale V4 and Streetfighter V4 models affects all vehicles with single-sided swingarms manufactured between 2018 and 2025. The reason for this is a possible material defect in the rear axle. Ducati is responding as a precautionary measure by replacing the component free of charge. No other safety issues are known at this time.
