Following the recent registration of the model name YZF R2, there are growing indications that Yamaha is planning a new sports series for the Indian market. The motorcycle is intended to expand the existing supersport portfolio and specifically target the 200cc segment, which is expected to experience strong growth in the coming years.
Positioning between the R15 and R3
Yamaha currently offers the R15, a 155cc entry-level supersport model, and the R3, a significantly more powerful motorcycle with a displacement of 321 cubic centimeters, in India. There is a noticeable gap between the two. This is exactly where the YZF R2 is to be positioned. Internationally, it is intended as a model between the R15 and R25, but in India it would be the first direct alternative in the mid-range supersport segment.
It is considered unlikely that it will replace the R15. The 155cc model has been one of the brand’s best-selling motorcycles for years and is considered both economically and technically successful. It is more likely that there will be a parallel offering, with the R2 complementing it as a more powerful option.
Possible engine based on R15 technology
The technical foundation of the Yamaha YZF R2 is a newly developed single-cylinder engine with a displacement of around 200 cubic centimeters. This is reportedly based on the familiar 155cc platform of the R15 and will be enlarged accordingly. The aim is to adopt proven components and technologies to ensure reliability and suitability for everyday use.
While the current R15 delivers 18.4 hp (13.5 kW) at 10,000 rpm and 14.2 Nm (10.5 lb ft) at 7,500 rpm, the R2 is expected to deliver around 24 to 25 hp (17.7 to 18.4 kW). The maximum torque is expected to be around 18 to 19 Nm, which corresponds to approximately 13.3 to 14.0 lb ft. These figures would put the motorcycle on a par with established competitors.
Chassis, equipment, and technology
In terms of equipment, the YZF R2 is also set to position itself clearly above the R15. Modern assistance systems such as traction control and a full-color TFT display with extensive connectivity functions are expected. Riding modes could also be part of the concept.
In terms of chassis, upside-down forks at the front and a monoshock at the rear are considered likely. In addition, there will be 17-inch wheels, disc brakes at the front and rear, and dual-channel ABS as standard. Other features could include an assist and slipper clutch system and a quickshifter. All of this information is currently unconfirmed and based on industry expectations.
Competition in the 200cc segment
With the YZF R2, Yamaha would be competing directly with models such as the KTM RC 200, the Bajaj Pulsar RS 200, and the Hero Karizma XMR. These motorcycles already have an output of around 25 hp and are currently the benchmark in this segment. This would give Yamaha an equivalent offering for the first time, enabling it to compete in this market segment.
Possible market launch and price range
No official date for the market launch has been announced yet. However, industry insiders expect a market launch in the course of 2026 or early 2027 at the latest. In terms of price, the Yamaha YZF R2 is expected to be positioned above the R15.
An entry-level price of around €2,250 or approximately $2,450 is currently being discussed. This is based on an assumed price of around two lakh rupees in India. Whether Yamaha can achieve this price is likely to be decisive for the success of the model.
