Yamaha MT-09 PHEV: The hybrid roadster with an electric boost

Yamaha is bringing movement to the motorcycle market – with an unusual concept: the Japanese company has developed a plug-in hybrid version of its popular MT-09 naked bike.  The prototype combines the familiar three-cylinder engine with an additional electric motor, offering a mixture of classic riding fun and innovative technology.  However, according to Yamaha, the focus is not on CO2 neutrality, but on the joy of riding.

Evolution of the three-cylinder: MT-09 as the technological basis

The hybrid prototype is clearly based on the current Yamaha MT-09, which is equipped with a liquid-cooled in-line three-cylinder engine with a displacement of 890 cm³ and an output of 119 hp (87.5 kW) at 10,000 rpm.  The maximum torque is around 93 Nm.  This sportily tuned engine forms the heart of the MT-09 PHEV – but is now supplemented by electric drive components.

Compact electric drive and battery under the rear

As a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the MT-09 PHEV also has an electric motor that has been integrated “piggyback”.  Yamaha has not yet provided more precise performance data on the electric motor, such as rated or peak power.  There is also no information on the capacity or range of the battery – presumably mounted under the seat.  The engineers have obviously focused on the most compact design possible in order to keep the weight low and not compromise the well-known slim naked bike profile.

Three riding modes: gasoline, electric or both

The hybrid Yamaha can be ridden purely electrically, purely conventionally or with a combination of both drive systems.  The appropriate mode is selected automatically – electronically controlled depending on the speed and power requirement.  The combination is intended to combine the advantages of both drives, such as quiet rolling in city traffic and sporty performance on country roads.

Y-AMT automatic gearshift: semi-automatic on the road

Yamaha’s new Y-AMT technology is also on board – an automated gearshift with optional clutch engagement.  Although the clutch lever is present, it is hardly needed in automatic mode.  In purely electric mode, it is not used at all.  This system is reminiscent of the concepts of other manufacturers, where the focus is on simple operation and high suitability for everyday use.

Weight, range and tank volume: still open

Neither the weight of the hybrid prototype nor the electric or combined range have yet been specified.  However, one technical feature is striking: there are cooling elements at the top of the tank – presumably for the battery or the electronics – which could indicate a reduced tank volume.  It can be assumed that the hybrid technology has resulted in a certain additional weight, but Yamaha has not provided exact figures.

Yamaha hybrid offensive: Three prototypes in development

The MT-09 PHEV is not Yamaha’s only hybrid project. A three-engine SPHEV scooter was presented back in February 2025, and now the hybrid MT follows.  A third prototype – a sporty model – is currently under development.  It is still unclear whether the R3, R7, R9 or even R1 platforms will be used.  If it becomes an R9, a lot of technology could be taken from the MT-09.

Series production: No plans yet

Yamaha is remarkably reticent when it comes to series production.  Despite working prototypes, there are no announcements for market-ready PHEV motorcycles.  This is likely to be a strategic decision – not least because hybrid models already available, such as Kawasaki’s Z7 Hybrid or Ninja 7 Hybrid, are reportedly slow sellers rather than bestsellers.
