Return of the 490?
Since 2019, there has been talk of a 490 model family to be developed and produced in collaboration with Indian partner Bajaj. Five models were planned: Adventure, Duke, RC, SMC R, and SM T. At the same time, Husqvarna was planning a 501 series based on the same platform. However, the project was officially halted in 2023 because the development costs for a 400–500 cc twin were considered too high.
However, the latest spy photos show an RC 490 with sporty full fairing. Components originating from the cooperation with CFMoto are particularly striking. These include a single-sided rear swing arm, parts of the frame, and identical footrest and gearshift components. The 450 cc twin from CFMoto, which already delivers around 50 hp (37 kW) in models such as the 450SR and 450NK, is apparently the basis for this. KTM could thus bring an RC 490 model to series production relatively quickly and serve the growing 400–500 cc class.
Replacement for the 690?
Another theory is that the new twins are intended as successors to the single-cylinder 690 series. Stricter emissions standards are making it increasingly difficult to continue offering large-volume single-cylinder engines that comply with regulations. A parallel twin in the 650 to 700 cc range would circumvent these problems, offer smoother running and more consistent power delivery.
Since KTM is already pursuing a strategy of increasing displacement to comply with emission standards in its larger models (790 → 890 → 990), a similar step could also be taken in the mid-range segment. This would see a twin with around 650 to 700 cc replace the 690 and compete in the market against the Kawasaki Ninja 650, Yamaha MT-07, and Triumph Trident 660.
Two parallel projects?
The latest sightings raise the question of whether KTM is developing two different platforms in parallel:
- With Bajaj in India: a twin in the 650 cc range as a possible replacement for the 690.
- With CFMoto in China: a 490 series with a 450 cc twin, based on existing CFMoto technology.
This dual strategy would enable KTM to target different markets – on the one hand, the highly sought-after 400–500 cc class, and on the other, the established mid-range segment between 650 and 750 cc.
Market launch date
The prototypes spotted still appear unfinished, with provisional fairing parts and simple chassis components. A realistic timeframe for a presentation would be EICMA 2026 at the earliest, with a market launch in 2027. While the 490 models are expected to be manufactured in China, production of the larger twin in India would be conceivable. A market launch in Europe is considered likely, but in India it is uncertain, as a separate twin project is being worked on there.
Conclusion
It is still unclear whether KTM is pursuing the return of the 490 or the replacement of the 690 – or both at the same time. However, it is clear that the brand is working on a new twin platform to expand the mid-range segment. As with previous projects, it remains to be seen whether the prototypes will actually go into production.
