Yamaha confirms V4 engine: MotoGP debut in Misano

Yamaha will use a new V4 engine for the first time at the upcoming San Marino and Rimini Riviera Grand Prix (September 12-14). This marks the end of the manufacturer’s more than two-decade-long tradition of exclusively using four-cylinder inline engines with crossplane crankshafts. According to Yamaha, the prototype of the new M1 will take to the track for the first time in Misano.

Development with Augusto Fernandez

The development of the V4 version was largely overseen by test rider Augusto Fernandez. He is also set to ride the machine for the first time during the race weekend. However, Yamaha emphasizes that this is a prototype model. Accordingly, they want to dampen expectations for the time being.

Factory rider appearances

In addition to Fernandez, factory riders Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins are also set to test the new M1. Their appearance is planned for the Monday after the Grand Prix in Misano. Quartararo had recently made it clear on several occasions that his contract extension with Yamaha was closely linked to the development of the V4 engine. In addition, further development of the current M1 with an inline engine is said to have been largely discontinued in order to focus resources entirely on the V4 project.

Reasons for the change in strategy

The decision to go with a V4 is seen as a direct response to the current competitive situation. While other manufacturers such as Ducati and KTM are enjoying success with V4 engines, Yamaha has recently been unable to achieve comparable results with its traditional inline design. The new engine is intended to help the company regain its position at the top.

Official statements

Paolo Pavesio, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing, explained in advance:

“This is an excellent preview and a concrete sign of our commitment to the future. We remain determined to get the most out of every race weekend.”

Yamaha is thus underlining its ambition to not only be competitive in the near future with the new technology, but also to be able to fight for victories again in the long term.
