Alignment with international standards
With the renaming and realignment of the Supertwin category, the organizers are pursuing the goal of bringing the Tourist Trophy’s competition conditions more in line with series such as the British Superbike Championship (BSB) and the Supersport World Championship. In addition to the Sportbike class, the modernization also affects the Supersport category. As already begun in previous years, this is to be fully adapted to the internationally applicable Next Generation regulations.
This will broaden the technical basis of the participating motorcycles. In the future, both classic 650cc twin-cylinder bikes and more powerful and modern machines will be permitted. The aim is to achieve greater technical diversity and a field of participants that better reflects the development of sports motorcycles.
New structure in the 2026 race calendar
The schedule for the 2026 TT has also been revised. The race calendar now stipulates that the Supersport and Superstock classes will swap places in the weekly schedule. Specifically, this means that the Superstock races will now take place on the same day as the Sidecar TT. The Supersport class, on the other hand, will be held together with the newly created Sportbike TT.
Another change is that the Superstock class will now open the race week, replacing the Supersport category in this role.
Greater flexibility and more rest days
Gary Thompson MBE BEM, Clerk of the Course at ACU Events Ltd, emphasized in the announcement that the revised schedule had been a key concern. The additional buffer and rest days within the qualifying week are intended to provide greater flexibility.
Thompson explained: “Refining the schedule for 2026 strengthens the basic framework of the event and ensures that we can respond to the changing demands of the modern TT.”
A planned rest day during the practice week and extended contingency periods in case of bad weather are not only intended to provide a higher degree of planning security. They also aim to improve the workload for everyone involved – from the riders to the medical staff and volunteers.
According to Thompson, the greater flexibility will enable “more dynamic and safer decisions,” especially in difficult weather conditions. In addition, the new regulations will make it easier to reconcile any rescheduling with public life on the island.
Date and possible postponement
The 2026 Tourist Trophy is scheduled to take place from May 25 (the British Spring Bank Holiday) to June 6. Should weather conditions cause postponements, the organizers reserve the right to move the final race – the Senior TT – to Sunday, June 7.
