The Formula 73 makes direct reference to the Ducati 750 Super Sport Desmo introduced in 1973. This model was the first Ducati road bike with desmodromic valve control and was developed as an offshoot of the racing machine with which Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari won the 200 Miglia di Imola in 1972. This success is considered the starting point for Ducati’s involvement in production-based racing.
The 750 Super Sport Desmo was created at a time of social and cultural upheaval. The 1970s were characterized by artistic diversity and a strong desire for renewal. It was in this environment that the brand’s sporty image continued to develop.
The Formula 73 is a modern homage to this phase and is intended to convey the values of style, technical sophistication, and performance that have been associated with Ducati since the 1970s and 1980s.
Design and features in the style of an urban café racer
Visually, the Formula 73 is based on the lines of the historic 750 Super Sport Desmo. The silhouette is slim and minimalist. According to the manufacturer, the silver and aqua green decor was developed based on archive material from the Ducati Style Center. A vertical gold stripe on the tank references the unpainted area of the 750 Imola Desmo, which was once used to check the fuel level.
Clip-on handlebars with bar-end mirrors, short fairing, and a compact rear end emphasize the café racer character. Numerous components milled from solid aluminum, including brake and clutch levers with separate reservoirs, footrests, and a standard Rizoma fuel cap, add technical accents.
As is customary with limited edition Ducati models, each one bears the model name and individual serial number on the triple clamp. The scope of delivery includes a certificate of authenticity and a box with historical images and design sketches.
Engine and technology: Desmodue with 73 hp
The Formula 73 is powered by an air-cooled 803 cm³ Desmodue L Twin with two valves and desmodromic valve control. The engine is Euro5+ homologated.
The maximum power output is 73 hp, equivalent to 53.7 kW at 8,250 rpm. The maximum torque is 65.2 Nm, equivalent to 48.1 lb ft at 7,000 rpm. The silencer, developed in collaboration with Termignoni and type-approved, is designed to give the engine a distinctive sound signature. A ride-by-wire throttle control ensures progressive throttle response.
The chassis is based on a steel trellis frame painted aqua green. At the front is a 41 mm upside-down fork from KYB, at the rear a KYB shock absorber with adjustable spring preload. The 17-inch spoked wheels are fitted with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tires in sizes 120/70 at the front and 180/55 at the rear.
The braking system consists of a radially mounted four-piston Brembo caliper and a 330 mm brake disc at the front. The dry weight without fuel is 183 kg, equivalent to 403 lbs.
The electronic package includes an inertial measurement unit-based cornering ABS function, Ducati Traction Control, power modes, Ducati Quick Shift, and two riding modes called Sport and Road. A 4.3-inch TFT display shows the information. Full LED lighting including daytime running lights, Ducati Multimedia System preparation, and turn-by-turn navigation are also provided.

The Formula 73 plays a central role in the short film A Piece of Timeless. In it, Italian actor Stefano Accorsi reflects on his first ride on a motorcycle and draws parallels between acting and motorsport. The film is available on Ducati’s official YouTube channel.
Production, apparel, and market launch in 2026
The Formula 73 will be produced in a limited series of 873 units. Delivery in Europe is scheduled for spring 2026, with other markets to follow by the end of the summer.
A helmet designed in collaboration with Arai and a sporty jacket that echoes the Formula 73’s color scheme are available to match the motorcycle.
