After several days of preparation, acclimatization, and careful planning, Jiri Zak and the Stark Future team ventured once again to one of the most challenging locations for altitude records. Their destination was Ojos del Salado in the Chilean Andes, considered the highest active volcano in the world and a testing ground for extreme vehicle projects for many years.
Record-breaking journey to the world’s highest active volcano
Ojos del Salado reaches a total height of around 6,893 meters and is known for its extremely changeable conditions. Thin air, freezing temperatures, strong winds, and unstable volcanic terrain make every attempt a calculated risk. It was here that Zak reached an officially measured altitude of 6,721 meters with the Stark Varg EX on November 30, 2025.
To document the measurement beyond doubt, all GPS devices were calibrated and certified on Thursday, November 27. According to the team, the actual ascent went without any major incidents. However, final recognition of the record is still pending, as GPS data, witness statements, and log files are currently being verified by an independent body.
Production motorcycle under extreme conditions
It is particularly noteworthy that the record was achieved on a completely standard Stark Varg EX. No modifications or special technical solutions were used. While combustion engines lose power at high altitudes due to a lack of oxygen, this problem does not arise with an electric motor. However, cold temperatures and low air pressure pose other challenges, such as the thermal management of the battery and power electronics.
According to the manufacturer, the Stark Varg EX offers a maximum torque of 1,036 Nm, which is equivalent to around 764 lb ft. It also has a driving time of up to six hours. These key data played a central role in the careful energy and traction planning during the ascent.
Experience from previous record attempts
Jiri Zak is no stranger to Ojos del Salado. Back in 2020, he reached an altitude of 6,546 meters there on a KTM 450 EXC F, setting the world altitude record for motorcycles at the time. Since then, he says he has been pursuing the goal of surpassing this mark with an electric motorcycle.
After returning to base camp, Zak explained that the section towards Argentina Pass proved to be the biggest challenge. Wind and snow drifts had erased existing tracks and made it difficult to choose the right line. Mistakes were hardly forgivable under these conditions.
Classification and open record question
The new altitude of 6,721 meters would surpass the previous record, which according to current information is still held by Yamaha factory rider Pol Tarrés. Tarrés is said to have reached an altitude of 6,756 meters in 2024. This achievement remains in question and causes some uncertainty regarding the record.
Accordingly, Zak’s attempt is currently being officially reviewed. The result will be announced after the independent verification has been completed. Until then, the record is considered pending.
Electric drive at the limit
From Stark Future’s perspective, the project was not just about a number. CEO and founder Anton Wass emphasized that the attempt was intended to show that an electric drive can also function under extreme conditions and enable controllable driving. The project was supported by a specialized mountain and production team that spent several days on site analyzing weather windows and route conditions.
It remains to be seen whether the record will be officially recognized. Regardless, the ride shows that electric motorcycles are now also being used in areas that have long been considered the domain of classic combustion engines.
