BMW Vision AMBY & i Vision AMBY

At the IAA Mobility BMW presented the concepts Vision AMBY and i Vision AMBY, a mix between bicycle and motorcycle with electric drive. They are intended to demonstrate an innovative option, for the urban mobility of tomorrow.

AMBY stands for “Adaptive Mobility.” In addition to Vision AMBY, the “i Vision AMBY” concept was also presented, both with an e-drive and with three speed levels for different types of roads. The difference lies in the activation of the drive. I Vision AMBY is a typical Padelec, so it is powered by pedaling like most electric bikes. Vision AMBY is equipped with footpegs like a motorcycle and is accelerated via a throttle grip.

It is said to enable speeds of up to 25 km/h on bike paths, up to 45 km/h on inner-city roads and up to 60 km/h on multi-lane roads. This would make the concept bike very versatile, although it would also require the appropriate driver’s license, registration and protective equipment, depending on how it is used.

The different modes are to be activated via an app on the smartphone, or also via geofencing, based on the corresponding road on which one is currently located. Currently, however, this is still theory, as the legal framework for a vehicle with a modular speed concept does not exist and would first have to be created.

At the same time, BMW Motorrad is thus consistently continuing its electromobility strategy for urban agglomerations.
