Honda Motor Co, KTM R&D GmbH, Piaggio Group and Yamaha Motor Co Ltd have jointly signed a consortium agreement on replaceable batteries for motorcycles and light electric vehicles.

This was the next step after the memorandum of understanding signed on March 01. The consortium believes that a jointly developed interchangeable battery system is key to the development of low-voltage electric mobility. The batteries could then be used in mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, three-wheelers and even four-wheeled vehicles.

Together, the aim is to achieve sustainable lifecycle management of batteries within the framework of international climate policy. With a corresponding system, it would be possible in the future to exchange an empty battery for a charged one at certain locations. This would make it possible to “bypass” long charging times, which would make it much easier to use an electric motorcycle.
