Sturgis Motorcycle Rally – 2026

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
86th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
August 7 – August 16, 2026
Every August, a steady rumble rolls through the Black Hills of South Dakota. It’s not thunder—it’s the sound of thousands of engines as riders from across the country and around the world make their way to Sturgis. In 2026, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally returns for its 86th edition.
What began in 1938 as a small gathering with just nine racers has grown into one of the largest motorcycle events worldwide. The rally was founded by Clarence “Pappy” Hoel, an Indian Motorcycle dealer and member of the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club. Early activities included races, stunt shows, a group ride, and community festivities. Despite a pause during World War II, the event quickly resumed and continued to expand.
Over the decades, new highlights were added, including Hill Climb and Motocross races. The duration extended from a few days to a full 10-day schedule. Main Street in downtown Sturgis became a central hub, closed to regular traffic and dedicated to motorcycles during the rally. Vendor areas grew from a handful of stands to hundreds of exhibitors offering everything from apparel and food to custom-built bikes.
Camping has always been part of the rally experience. While early visitors pitched tents in backyards and city parks, today there are numerous campgrounds in and around Sturgis, some operating like small event towns with concert stages, shops, and entertainment areas.
Since the 1990s, annual attendance has averaged around 500,000 visitors, with milestone anniversaries drawing even larger crowds. Today, the rally is a structured and professionally organized festival featuring daily concerts, scenic rides through the Black Hills, bike shows, racing events, and special theme days such as Military Appreciation Day and dedicated gatherings for women riders.
More than eight decades after its first edition, one thing remains unchanged: every August, Sturgis becomes a global meeting point for motorcycle culture.
