The dates are set, and in September 2026 the organisers announced two major rule changes within a few days of each other. The sidecars return to the schedule with a new technical concept after being cancelled at the 2026 TT. At the same time, the Sportbike TT says goodbye to the Supertwin machines that shaped the class for many years.

When Is the 2027 Isle of Man TT?
The 2027 TT runs from Monday, May 31, to Saturday, June 12, 2027. As usual, the event begins on the bank holiday and ends with the Milwaukee Senior TT on the final Saturday.
Racing once again takes place on the 37.73-mile Snaefell Mountain Course, which has been used since 1911. A detailed daily schedule for the 2027 TT is due to be published after the evaluation of the 2026 TT. The following year is already pencilled in as well: the organisers have provisionally set May 29 to June 10, 2028 for the 2028 TT.
The early announcement is meant to give fans, teams, marshals and tour operators planning certainty. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company ferries from Heysham, Liverpool and Dublin to Douglas in particular are regularly booked out months in advance during TT fortnight.
A revised format has applied since 2026, which according to the organisers also sets the direction for the years ahead. There are three rest days instead of two, seven practice and qualifying sessions instead of six, and extended contingency windows for weather delays. Superstock runs on the same day as the sidecars, Supersport together with the Sportbike class. Are Sidecars Returning to the TT in 2027?
Yes. On September 9, 2026, the organisers confirmed that sidecars will be part of the Tourist Trophy programme again from 2027. The commitment covers three years until 2029, with two races planned per event.
This follows a deep cut. At the 2026 TT, race control cancelled the class for the rest of the event on May 28 after Maria Costello and Shaun Parker crashed heavily at Brandish and defending champions Ryan and Callum Crowe crashed at Crosby. A Sidecar Sustainability Review was launched in June. Its First-Stage Report of July 31, 2026 drew on 472 responses, 465 of them valid, as well as the work of three expert panels. It set out a path back into the 2027 TT schedule, but only with significantly less power. The technical panel named 95 to 100 hp (around 96 to 101 PS / 71 to 75 kW) as a starting point for discussion, not as a fixed limit. The report sums up the direction like this: “The objective is not to build the fastest Sidecar class possible. It is to build the most sustainable Sidecar class possible.”
Which Engines and Rules Apply to the Sidecars in 2027?
The previous 600cc four-cylinder engines are gone. Instead, near-production engines built to British Sportbike rules are permitted, with the Yamaha R7, Aprilia RS660 and Kawasaki Ninja 650 among the examples named. Every outfit gets a Mectronik control ECU, combined with a balance of performance approach. Under this system, the organisers equalise the performance of different engines through technical requirements so that no concept has a fundamental advantage.
Existing chassis remain eligible, while separate wings, aerofoils, fins and spoilers are banned. Stricter entry conditions also apply. Both races in 2027 run over two laps of the Mountain Course; distances for 2028 and 2029 have not yet been set. The organiser explicitly describes the 2027 format as a starting point rather than the final form of the new sidecar formula. Criticism has come from Lee Crawford, among others, who warns of extreme costs.
Time is tight for the teams. According to the review’s roadmap, conversions and certification are planned from December to February, followed by pre-inspections and testing in spring 2027. The final inspection is scheduled for April 2027.

Which Bikes Can Race in the 2027 Sportbike TT?
From 2027, only machines built to Sportbike rules are eligible for the Sportbike TT, and the Supertwins drop out. The Tourist Trophy organisers confirmed this on September 10, 2026.
This ends the Supertwin era on the Mountain Course after 14 years. The class started in 2012 as the Lightweight TT. In 2026 it had already been renamed Sportbike TT and admitted bikes from the Sportbike category of the British Superbike Championship for the first time, such as the Triumph Daytona 660, Suzuki GSX-8R, Honda Hornet 750 and CF Moto 675SR-R. The established 650cc twins such as the Paton S1-R were still allowed to race, however. In the first race of the new class, Supertwins took the top six places, with Michael Dunlop winning on the Paton. The best rider on a Sportbike machine was Dominic Herbertson, seventh on a Triumph Daytona 660.
From 2027, the technical regulations and BoP match the British National Sportbike Championship. Minor TT-specific changes to fairings and front ends are permitted. Head of Sport Ed Wilson says the move to Sportbike creates a much more relevant and sustainable platform.

Retirement is not on his mind: “I’m not hanging my boots up just yet.”

Davey Todd
The 2025 Superbike TT winner and 2024 Senior TT winner missed the entire 2026 TT. The TT’s medical specialist panel declared him unfit to race on May 12, 2026, because the injuries from his crash at the Daytona 200 in March had not healed in time. Todd had suffered fractures to his femur, tibia, foot and nose and has since been focusing on 2027.
Michael Dunlop and Dean Harrison
Michael Dunlop enters the new season as the record holder with 36 TT wins. At the 2026 TT he won both Supersport races and the first race of the Sportbike TT. He postponed his project with the Ducati Panigale V4 R in the Superbike class at short notice in 2026 and rode Hawk Racing’s Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade instead.

What Changes Around the TT in 2027?
The TT rule changes do not automatically apply to the island’s other road races. The Manx Grand Prix, organised by the Manx Motor Cycle Club, is carrying over its 2026 regulations unchanged for 2027. Supertwins therefore remain eligible there in the Sportbike MGP and the Junior MGP. The club’s message is short: “Supertwins are staying for 2027”.
