KTM parts ways with X-Bow: Sports car division goes to investor group led by Belgian brewing dynasty

After many years, KTM is finally withdrawing from the automotive business. The Austrian motorcycle brand is selling its subsidiary KTM Sportcar GmbH, which has been responsible for the development and production of X-Bow sports cars since 2008. In future, the division will be continued by an international investor group headed by the Belgian industrialist family De Mevius – founders of the world’s largest brewery group Anheuser-Busch InBev.

Focus on core motorcycle business

The decision follows a strategic realignment of KTM after its takeover by the Indian conglomerate Bajaj Auto. The aim is to focus more strongly on the motorcycle segment. As part of this reorganization, KTM had already announced its intention to withdraw from the bicycle business – this does not refer to the independent KTM Fahrrad GmbH, but to its own e-bike segment.

With the sale of KTM Sportcar GmbH, the only car division in the portfolio will now also disappear. The X-Bow, an ultra-light road sports car with a focus on purist driving dynamics, was previously manufactured in Graz. Sales and service were handled by a central competence center in Wels, Upper Austria, where there is also a showroom.

Takeover by investors with a motorsport background

The sale was announced back in June 2025 and the contracts have now been signed. However, the deal is still subject to regulatory approvals in Austria. The purchase price has not been officially disclosed, but speculation suggests it is around 10 million euros (approx. 10.9 million US dollars).

The new owner group is led by the De Mevius family. This family founded the AB InBev brewery group, which includes internationally renowned beer brands such as Budweiser, Corona, and Stella Artois, as well as Beck’s, Diebels, and Hasseröder in German-speaking countries. A central figure within the family is Gregoire De Mevius, a former rally driver and avowed motorsport enthusiast. His brother Frédéric De Mevius is also part of the AB InBev management team.

According to KTM, other investors with backgrounds in motorsports and entrepreneurship from Austria and abroad are also involved alongside the De Mevius family. “The process is going according to plan. De Mevius has carefully selected the relevant investors and put together the investor group accordingly,” KTM told the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten newspaper.

New plans for the future of the X-Bow

The new owners intend not only to continue the KTM X-Bow brand, but also to expand it in a targeted manner. In addition to the existing line of street-legal super sports cars, off-road models are also to be added in the future. Whether this will be a new vehicle concept or a derivative of existing models has not been specified.

KTM Sportcar GmbH currently employs around 30 people and produces around 100 vehicles per year. The current top model, the X-Bow GT-XR, delivers 500 hp (368 kW) to the road. The price for the vehicle starts at around €300,000 net (approximately US$327,000). The future direction points to a combination of exclusivity and further development in motorsport.

Despite the sale, KTM will remain associated with the new ownership structure as the licensor for the “KTM X-Bow” brand. Continuing under a new umbrella could give the X-Bow new impetus without KTM itself having to commit further resources in the automotive sector.
