The long road to MotoGP
Toprak Razgatlioglu has been harboring ambitions to gain a foothold in MotoGP for some time now. He has already been linked to the series several times in the past, including an unofficial test with the Yamaha YZR-M1. However, this was not very successful – not least because the bike was allegedly not adapted to his riding style. The disappointing lap times raised doubts as to whether the talented Turk could hold his own in MotoGP. The result: Razgatlioglu said goodbye to Yamaha and switched to BMW.
Triumph with BMW and new prospects
The switch to the Bavarian manufacturer also brought back success. Razgatlioglu secured the WSBK title with BMW in the 2024 season. Although rumors have circulated that BMW could enter the premier class in the medium term with the new MotoGP regulations from 2027, there have been no concrete plans to date. Despite the existing contract with BMW until December 25, 2025, the urge to enter MotoGP still seems unbroken. There are now many indications that the Turk could ride a MotoGP bike this year – for Honda.
Wildcard entries still in 2025?
According to reports from Paddock-GP, Razgatlioglu is said to have signed a wildcard contract with Honda – valid for selected races in the 2025 season, after the end of the WSBK season. A full switch to Honda in MotoGP is being considered for 2026. However, his current contract with BMW is currently still standing in the way. An early wildcard entry would only be possible with the agreement of both parties.
Who would have to make way for Razgatlioglu?
If the plan for 2026 comes to fruition, the question arises as to the place in the Honda line-up. One option would be Lucio Cecchinello’s LCR team, where Johann Zarco is currently riding. At 34, Zarco is the oldest rider in the field, but is the only one who has regularly scored points for Honda so far. Another – much more drastic – option would be a move to the works team in place of Luca Marini. The Italian fell short of expectations in 2024, which could weaken his position within the team.
Nothing is official yet
Honda has yet to make an official statement. When asked, a spokesperson for the Japanese manufacturer stated that they “cannot comment as it is only a rumor.” Nevertheless, the mere prospect of Toprak Razgatlioglu riding in MotoGP should provide plenty to talk about – and further increase the tension in the current MotoGP season.
