- Design patent for the TVS Ronin Café Racer filed in India
- Concept based on the factory custom from MotoSoul 2024
- No official statement from TVS on series production
Indian motorcycle manufacturer TVS Motor Company is making waves with a newly surfaced design patent. The drawings show a café racer variant of the established Ronin 225 and bear a strong resemblance to a show bike that TVS presented to the public at its in-house MotoSoul festival in late 2024 as a so-called factory custom. Whether the café racer version will actually enter series production has not been confirmed by TVS. Nevertheless, the patent provides a concrete indication that the manufacturer is at least actively pursuing the idea.

From Show Bike to Patent Office
The story of the Ronin Café Racer did not begin with the patent filing. TVS markets the Ronin under the motto “Unscripted,” positioning it as a motorcycle that defies categorization into any single segment. In this spirit, the manufacturer regularly experiments with different interpretations of the platform. In late 2024, TVS showed a café racer version as a factory custom for the first time. Unlike many design patents where years pass between filing and a potential production model, the patent application here followed relatively quickly after the concept was revealed.
At MotoSoul 2025 in December, TVS doubled down and presented further custom interpretations based on the Ronin. Among them, Indonesian custom studio Smoked Garage showcased a build called “Kensai” with extensive modifications to the design, chassis, and subframe. TVS clearly positions the Ronin as a flexible platform for different style directions.
What Sets the Café Racer Apart from the Standard Ronin
The patent drawings and previously shown concept images reveal the changes TVS has made compared to the standard Ronin. At the center is a significantly sportier riding position: low-mounted clip-on handlebars replace the more upright bars of the standard version, complemented by rearset and slightly raised footpegs. This combination creates a more stretched-out, sportier posture typical of café racers. The steering head angle is also said to be steeper than on the base model.
Visually, the so-called bikini fairing immediately stands out, integrated into the headlight assembly along with a swept-back windscreen. This setup is designed not only to deflect wind but also to protect the headlight from stone chips. The 14-liter tank appears to be retained and flows seamlessly into the small fairing.
At the rear, a seat in typical café racer style replaces the previous two-up setup. Instead of a pillion seat, there is a tail cowl that is said to feature race-style number graphics in the production version. The rear fender is more sharply integrated into the taillight, giving the motorcycle a noticeably more compact line. Also notable is an upswept, shorter end can that clearly differs from the standard Ronin’s exhaust.
While the standard model uses an offset instrument display, the patent images show a centrally positioned, round combination gauge. The tank shape and alloy wheels correspond to the regular Ronin. With exclusive color variants and graphics, TVS could further distinguish the café racer version visually from the base model.

Mechanicals Remain Largely Unchanged
Beneath the new bodywork sits the familiar 225.9cc single-cylinder engine with SOHC valve actuation and oil cooling. Depending on the source, the engine produces 20.1 to 20.4 hp (14.8 to 15 kW) and delivers a maximum torque of 19.93 Nm. A five-speed gearbox with assist and slipper clutch handles shifting duties. Major mechanical changes to the drivetrain are not expected, as the café racer version is primarily a visual and ergonomic reinterpretation.
Chassis and Brakes
The Ronin’s chassis is based on a double-cradle frame. Up front, a 41mm USD fork handles suspension duties, while a monoshock with seven-step adjustable preload works at the rear. Both axles ride on 17-inch wheels. The braking system consists of a 300mm disc at the front and a 240mm disc at the rear. Depending on the trim level, the Ronin is available with single-channel or dual-channel ABS, including Rain and Urban ABS modes. Observers suggest the café racer version could feature firmer suspension tuning and sportier tires to improve handling and stability at higher speeds.
Rising Sales Figures as an Argument for Expansion
A key factor in the decision about potential series production is likely the Ronin’s current sales performance. In early 2025, the monthly average still stood at around 4,000 to 5,000 units sold. In recent months, the Ronin has surpassed the 8,000-unit mark per month, reaching an all-time high. With this upward trend, the timing would be right to expand the model range and attract additional buyer groups.
In the Indian market, the Ronin primarily competes with the Royal Enfield Hunter 350, which significantly outsells it. True café racers remain rare in India and are typically positioned at much higher price points, such as the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 or the Triumph Thruxton. A café racer Ronin in the 200 to 250cc segment would thus offer a comparatively affordable entry into this category and could give TVS a competitive advantage.
Launch Date Open, but Signs Are Promising
Officially, TVS has not commented on production plans for the Ronin Café Racer. A design patent alone does not confirm series production. However, several factors suggest it will not remain merely an exercise in intellectual property protection: the close alignment of the patent with an already publicly shown concept, the Ronin’s growing sales figures, and the strategic gap in the Indian café racer segment below the 650cc class. Some industry observers consider a market launch within six to eight months possible, with a limited special edition also conceivable, similar to the recently introduced Ronin Agonda Edition.
