- Winner at the North West 200, Isle of Man TT (Superstock and Superbike) and Ulster Grand Prix in 2019
- Auction by Bonhams as part of the Spring Stafford Sale
- Includes finisher cap, winner’s medal and race reports from the 2019 season
Anyone who has always wanted to own a piece of motorsport history will get the chance in late April: the Smiths Racing BMW S1000 RR on which Peter Hickman achieved a remarkable winning streak on the road racing circuits in 2019 is being auctioned by Bonhams. The bike goes under the hammer as part of the Spring Stafford Sale at the International Classic Motorcycle Show, with the auction closing on 26 April at 11:30 am.
One Motorcycle, One Season, Four Victories
The 2019 season was among the strongest of Peter Hickman’s career. On this single BMW S1000 RR, he claimed victories at three of the most prestigious road races in the world. At the North West 200, he won the Superstock race, marking back-to-back victories in the class on the same machine. The first of those two wins had also been achieved on the Smiths Racing BMW.
At the Isle of Man TT, Hickman was dominant: in the RL360 Superstock race, he crossed the finish line 26.045 seconds ahead of Dean Harrison, who was riding a Kawasaki that year. On the very same day, he mounted the bike for the Superbike race after his designated Superbike machine developed technical problems shortly before the start. He won that race too. At the Ulster Grand Prix, another Superstock victory followed.
Wingless Yet Fast
The 2019-specification S1000 RR has a distinctive characteristic: it comes without winglets. BMW only began fitting aerodynamic wings to its top-tier sportbikes in 2021 with the M 1000 RR, while the standard S1000 RR did not receive them until the 2022 model year. The bike being auctioned is thus a witness to the transitional period before the winglet era transformed superbike racing both visually and technically.
Hickman and BMW: A Long-Standing Record of Success
All of Peter Hickman’s victories in the 1000 cc class on the road circuits have been achieved on BMW machinery. His first TT wins came in 2018. The Briton now has 14 TT victories in total, eleven of them in the so-called big-bike classes: six in the Superbike race and five in Superstock. Among those are three victories in the prestigious Senior TT. Remarkably, between 2018 and 2023, Hickman won every Senior TT race with a single exception. In 2019, Dean Harrison prevailed on a Kawasaki, while Hickman was forced to retire from the race.
Ten of his 14 TT victories were achieved at an average speed of over 130 miles per hour (around 209 km/h). His winning streak on the Island was finally broken in 2025, when he suffered an injury during practice and had to miss the entire event. His most recent TT victory dates from 2024, when he won the Superbike race. He had not competed on the Isle of Man since the 2024 event.
Since 2025, Hickman has been not only a rider but also a team principal: he runs the 8Ten Racing team alongside his teammate Davey Todd, who can also boast TT victories. Todd suffered a broken femur at the Daytona 200 earlier this year.
What the Auction Includes
According to the official Bonhams auction listing, the bike is not being sold on its own. Included in the lot are a “1st Dunlop” finisher cap and a winner’s medal from the 2019 Ulster Grand Prix inscribed “Daly’s Hyundai Superstock Race 2019 – 1st Place”. Also included is a folder containing race reports from the 2019 season. Bonhams regularly hosts the Spring Stafford Sale as part of the International Classic Motorcycle Show and is regarded as one of the most prestigious venues for historic racing and collector motorcycles.
