The EU had decided on a uniform regulation regarding the technical inspection of vehicles. France should therefore have introduced a general inspection for motorcycles. However, French motorcyclists have now successfully fought against this.
Motorcycles registered in France do not have to undergo a technical inspection by a control body at fixed intervals. Until now, a general inspection was not mandatory. This should change by a decision of the EU, as they demanded a uniform regulation for Europe. As early as January 1, 2022, France would therefore have had to introduce a compulsory general inspection for all motorcycles and scooters from 125cc.
France wanted to check how the whole thing could be implemented without upsetting motorcyclists too much, so the introduction was postponed to 01 January 2023.
Meanwhile, it seems clear that a main inspection for motorcycles is not coming. The European directive of 2014 offers the possibility to deviate from the technical inspection if measures are taken to promote road safety. For this reason, six possibilities for promotion have now been presented to the European Commission, some of which are even already being implemented.
These include a conversion premium for the purchase of an electric motorcycle, the introduction of “noise cameras,” penalties for unapproved or manipulated exhaust systems, better education about the safety of two-wheelers (also in terms of equipment), the inclusion of this education in the driver training program for the B driving license, and the thematization of environmentally friendly driving and the avoidance of noise in the A1 and A2 driving licenses.
