Ducati dominates MotoGP at Sachsenring 2023

Jorge Martín triumphs in a riveting duel at the LIQUI MOLY Motorcycle Grand Prix Germany 2023 at the Sachsenring.

An unforgettable race took place at the Sachsenring, which was the highlight of the LIQUI MOLY Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland 2023. After 30 highly dramatic laps, Jorge Martín (Pramac Racing) celebrated his second Grand Prix victory in the MotoGP class. The Spaniard prevailed over his brand colleague and World Champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) in a riveting duel, with the margin being just 0.064 seconds. This represents the second smallest gap between winner and runner-up in 25 years of MotoGP at the new Sachsenring.

An overjoyed Martín commented after the race: “This is a very emotional moment for me, after all, my last Grand Prix victory was almost two years ago. Now it has finally worked out again.”

Record-breaking event

The race weekend at the Sachsenring reached new heights, both in terms of spectator numbers and race performance. A total of 233,196 fans came to the track over the three days of the event, setting a new attendance record.

German participation

Germany’s Jonas Folger, once again competing as a substitute rider, finished in a respectable 17th place. He rode a solid race and gained valuable experience for the GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 team.

Marquez’s unfortunate weekend

A defining moment of the weekend was the retirement of six-time MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez. Having already suffered four crashes over the weekend, another accident occurred during the morning warm-up, with Marquez going down at Turn 7. Despite suffering a slight fracture to his finger in that crash, and a subsequent examination by race doctors who gave him the green light to take part in the race, Marquez decided not to compete.

Looking to the future

After the eventful weekend at the Sachsenring, all eyes now turn to the TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands, the oldest Grand Prix circuit on the MotoGP calendar. It remains exciting to see how the riders and teams will perform on this challenging track.
