GoPro and AGV join forces to develop smart motorcycle helmet – high-tech for the head

GoPro, the well-known manufacturer of action cameras, is entering the world of smart motorcycle helmets together with the Italian helmet specialist AGV.  The basis for this is the acquisition of the Australian start-up Forcite in 2024 – a company that had already made a name for itself with its intelligent MK1S motorcycle helmet.  GoPro now wants to launch the next generation of intelligent helmets on the market together with AGV.

From Forcite to GoPro: the origin of the idea

Forcite specialized in helmets equipped with an integrated camera, navigation system and communication unit.  The Forcite MK1S in particular combined modern technology with a roadworthy design and focused on discreetly integrating the technology without being obtrusive.  The built-in camera was based on a Sony sensor and was primarily intended for dashcam-like recordings – ideal for documenting journeys, but without any claim to cinematic image quality.

With GoPro’s know-how, this is likely to change.  In future, the focus will probably be on high-resolution action recordings directly from the helmet – a further development that seems obvious for many motorcyclists anyway, as GoPro cameras are often found on the chin bars of classic helmets today.

AGV as a partner: helmet expertise meets camera technology

As part of the Q1 2025 Annual Report, GoPro CEO Nicholas Woodman officially announced the cooperation with AGV.  The traditional manufacturer is known for its high-quality helmets, which are used in professional motorsports such as MotoGP.  According to Woodman, the aim is to work together to create “significant innovations that improve safety and performance in the motorcycle sector”, with both brands contributing their respective strengths in design, technology and brand identity.

An exact release date for the first jointly developed helmet has not yet been announced.  However, it is clear that development is already at an advanced stage.

Technological expectations and possible price range

It remains to be seen what specific functions the new high-tech helmet will offer. However, a combination of:

  • Integrated GoPro camera with 4K resolution
  • Communication system similar to Sena or Cardo
  • Navigation display in the field of vision
  • Sensors for accident detection or proximity warning systems
  • Auto-dimming visor for better visibility in changing light

In terms of price, the helmet is likely to be in the upper segment.  AGV models currently range from around €350 (approx. $380) to €1,800 (approx. $1,950).  A smart GoPro version could cost between €700 (approx. $760) and over €2,200 (approx. $2,400), depending on the features.  Special versions with a carbon shell could even exceed the €3,000 mark (around $3,250).

Between enthusiasm and skepticism

In the motorcycle community, the idea of a smart helmet with an integrated camera is being received differently.  While some welcome the integration of safety features and recording functions, others see the technology as an unnecessary luxury.  Critics emphasize that a helmet is first and foremost a protection system – and not an entertainment or recording device.

Nevertheless, there is a lot to be said for the combination of safety and technology, provided it is implemented sensibly.  In the ADV or touring scene in particular, there is growing interest in integrated systems that make riding safer and more comfortable.

Outlook

The collaboration between GoPro and AGV promises an exciting new product in the motorcycle sector.  If the two companies succeed in inconspicuously integrating a powerful camera into a high-quality helmet, this could set new standards in the field of “smart helmets” – both in terms of safety and user-friendliness.  Further details are expected in the course of 2025.
