MotoGP Malaysia 2025: Alex Marquez celebrates commanding victory in Sepang – Bagnaia retires after tire failure

Alex Marquez scored an impressive victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix. The Spanish Ducati rider (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) prevailed in the 20th MotoGP race of the season ahead of Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Joan Mir (Honda HRC Castrol). For Marquez, it is his third Grand Prix victory of the season and his first outside Spain. He also secured the runner-up title in the world championship on Saturday.

The start was turbulent: Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) took advantage of his pole position and took the holeshot, followed by Acosta and Marquez. Marquez showed his attacking spirit early on and overtook Bagnaia with a decisive maneuver. The Gresini rider thus broke the reigning world champion’s dominant lead.

Bagnaia and Acosta engage in a thrilling duel

In the early laps, Bagnaia and Acosta engaged in a spectacular battle. Acosta tried several times to pass Bagnaia in turns 4 and 9, but was initially unable to do so. The intense duel between the two allowed Marquez to pull out a lead of just under a second.

Behind them, another duel developed between Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Joan Mir. Morbidelli, Aldeguer, and other riders followed some distance behind.

Marquez extends lead – Acosta puts in a strong performance

As the race progressed, Marquez confidently defended his lead. Acosta managed to overtake Bagnaia on lap 11 and secure second place. Meanwhile, Marquez pulled further ahead and increased his lead to just under three seconds. Acosta impressed with his strong pace, but ultimately had to settle for second place.

Joan Mir benefited from Bagnaia’s problems in the final stages and moved up onto the podium. A technical defect on the rear wheel – according to Michelin, it was a puncture – forced Bagnaia to retire three laps before the end.

Podium for Mir, top 5 for Morbidelli and Quartararo

With Bagnaia out of the race, Joan Mir moved up to third place, securing Honda’s second podium finish of the season. Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) had a strong race, especially in the final sprint, and finished fourth, followed by Fabio Quartararo in fifth.

Sixth place went to Fabio Di Giannantonio, ahead of Enea Bastianini, who worked his way up from 19th on the grid to seventh. Luca Marini, Brad Binder, and Ai Ogura completed the top 10.

Further points went to Marco Bezzecchi, Johann Zarco, Alex Rins, Jack Miller, and Somkiat Chantra.

Moto3 causes moment of shock

The MotoGP race was overshadowed by an accident in Moto3: Jose Antonio Rueda and Noah Dettwiler collided heavily during the warm-up lap. Both riders were taken to hospital by helicopter but were conscious, according to the organizers. Alex Marquez expressed his concern: “My thoughts and prayers are with the Moto3 riders. I still have a queasy feeling in my stomach.”

Outlook: Battle for third place remains exciting

With his victory in Sepang and the runner-up world championship title under his belt, Alex Marquez travels to the next race in Portugal with momentum on his side. The battle for third place in the world championship remains exciting: Bezzecchi and Bagnaia are separated by only five points, with Acosta also still within striking distance.
