After further sightings during test drives, there are increasing indications of a comprehensively revised version of the KTM 790 Duke. The latest images show not only visual changes, but also technical details that point to strategic changes within the group. Unfortunately, images cannot be shown for legal reasons.
Revised appearance based on larger models
Compared to the current model, the newly designed front end is particularly striking. The upcoming 790 Duke will feature a more aggressive-looking headlight with projector technology. The lines are clearly based on more powerful series such as the KTM 990 Duke and the KTM 1390 Super Duke R.
The fuel tank, including the side extensions, has also been visibly redesigned. The new shapes appear more angular and are intended to bring the 790 Duke closer in appearance to the larger-displacement KTM naked bikes. This is complemented by newly designed side panels and a significantly modified rear silencer.
WP brake calipers as part of the corporate strategy
A key technical detail of the test machine is the WP brake calipers. WP is primarily known as a suspension supplier. The development of its own brake components is likely to be part of a stronger vertical integration and, according to industry estimates, should help to control costs.
WP brake calipers have previously been used on the internationally available KTM 390 Duke. With the 790 Duke, this technology would now be used for the first time in a segment above 500 cubic centimeters.
Drive system expected to remain unchanged
Apart from the visual and brake technology modifications, the engine is expected to remain unchanged. The current 799 cc inline twin-cylinder engine delivers 106.4 hp (78.3 kW) and a maximum torque of 87 Nm (64.2 lb ft). There are no indications of changes to performance or emissions at this stage.
Market launch still open
KTM has not yet announced a specific date for the presentation or market launch. However, the prototype tested already appears to be close to production, which suggests that it will be unveiled soon. It remains unclear in which markets the model will be offered.
What this means for me as a motorcyclist
The changes seen on the KTM 790 Duke suggest that the model will be more closely aligned with the brand’s larger naked bikes in the future. A more aggressive design can increase recognizability on the road, while the use of in-house WP brake calipers suggests that KTM is taking more control over key components. This should enable stable prices and a consistent supply of spare parts in the long term. Since the engine appears to remain unchanged, no fundamental changes in handling or power delivery are to be expected. Overall, there is much to suggest that the 790 Duke will retain its familiar character, while moving closer to the higher-end models in terms of appearance and technology.
