Exclusive look and features – a return to the past with modern accents
The Martin Edition Dakar specifically incorporates design elements from the factory racing machines of the time. The most striking feature is the special red and white paintwork, which, together with the authentically reproduced sponsor logos, creates a genuine retro charm. The look is complemented by matt black accents on the cylinder head covers, engine and enduro footrests.
Technically, the Martin Edition Dakar stands out thanks to a raised rear silencer from Unitgarage, made of stainless steel with a titanium cover (available in silver or black). According to the manufacturer, this exhaust system is over 1 kg lighter than the standard part. The sound is said to be more powerful, but remains within the legal limits for EU road approval.
Modern technology in a classic guise
The air- and oil-cooled boxer engine with 1,170 cm³, four valves per cylinder and an output of 109 hp (80 kW) at 7,000 rpm remains unchanged. The maximum torque is 115 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The enduro chassis offers more than 200 mm of suspension travel and a seat height of 860 mm. BMW specifies the total weight with a full tank as 229 kg (504 lbs), but the lighter exhaust system reportedly reduces the weight to approx. 228 kg (503 lbs).
Additional packages and equipment details
The Martin Edition Dakar comes with numerous equipment packages ex works. The Comfort Package includes heated grips, cruise control, and hill start assist. The Enduro Package Pro includes an 18-inch rear wheel, new footrests, handlebar risers, hand protectors, engine protection, and a longer side stand. The special rally seat is also included.
Price and availability
The base version of the BMW R 12 G/S starts at €16,990 (approximately $18,500). The Martin Edition Dakar is available at a price of €25,990 (approx. US$28,400). In addition to the exclusive look and equipment, it also includes the high-quality Unitgarage rear silencer (individual price from around €1,100, approx. US$1,200). The edition is not limited – anyone interested can order a Dakar G/S.
Outlook
It remains to be seen whether BMW itself will officially announce its own Dakar special model in the future. However, Motorrad Martin has already created a convincing homage to the brand’s legendary desert races with the Martin Edition Dakar.
