Harrison prevails in dramatic senior TT races

The last race of the Isle of Man TT 2019 was won by Dean Harrison. He was able to benefit from having problems with Peter Hickman in the fifth round with Smiths Racing BMW.

After two thirds of the race, Hickman already had an advantage of 18 seconds when he had problems with the cooling water and had to slow down. That cost him the victory.

The race course

Hickman led Glen Helen in the first round, just 0.351 seconds behind Harrison. Almost six seconds later, Cummins, Michael Dunlop, Michael Rutter and David Johnson followed. James Hillier had a problem and a lot back to 21st place.

Until Ballaugh, Harrison took the lead just two tenths of a second behind Hickman. At Ramsey, Hicky was ahead again, but only by a tenth. Cummins already had 11 seconds behind the lead duo. Only 0.024 seconds behind Michael Dunlop. Johnson passed Rutter, and Davey Todd knocked on the door.

In the opening lap, Hickman drove a lap of 134,284 mph. It was supposed to be the fastest lap of the race. He was able to get a margin of 2.2 seconds on Harrison. Cummins again 14 seconds behind. Then Dunlop, Johnson and Todd. John McGuinnes had to finish his race at Bungalow. Hillier was already able to work his way up to 11th place.

Until Glen Helen, Harrison could shorten the gap to Hickman by four-tenths. Cummins was able to break away from Dunlop, the gap grew to three seconds. Ten seconds later, Johnson followed, then another six seconds off Todd.

At Ramsey, Hickman had a gap of 3.4 seconds on Harrison. The second round he managed with a cut of 134.28 mph. Cummins was still in third place, but Dunlop was able to catch up a bit. Johnson retired at Bedstead, bringing Todd and Rutter to fifth and sixth place. Ian Hutchinson had to park his Honda at the pits.

After the pit stops, Hickman’s lead had grown to ten seconds. Cummins was only in fourth place, just under 11 seconds behind Dunlop. The distance between Todd and Rutter was only 1.4 seconds.

After the third lap, half the race distance, Hickman had a lead of 13.48 seconds over Harrison. Cummins seemed confident in third place as his advantage over Dunlop was already 16 seconds. Rutter could pass Todd. Hillier was now in seventh place.

After the second pitstops, movement came to the top. Harrison was able to reduce Hickman by 7.9 seconds on the fifth lap, as Hicky drove the first sector 9 seconds slower than Harrison. Until Ballaugh, the gap was only 1.1 seconds.

At Ramsey, Harrison had already taken the lead. Hickman lost seven to eight seconds in each section. Although clearly a technical problem, he continued his race. Harrison won the race with a lead of 53.062 seconds. Whether Hickman could hold the second place was open. Finally, he made it only 5.8 seconds ahead of Cummins, who finished in third place.
