After Honda patents surfaced back in November showing the installation of the Gold Wing’s front radar system, the system at the rear now follows.
Radar only at the front?
Ducati and BMW have already presented motorcycles equipped with a radar system. It is used to observe what is happening in front of the motorcycle to enable automatic cruise control. This should allow the motorcycle to automatically adjust its speed should you approach another vehicle.
Ducati has also installed a radar system at the rear of the Multistrada V4 to monitor the motorcycle’s blind spot. BMW has dispensed with this on the R 1250 RT.
Rear radar only for the Gold Wing Tour?
Until now, it looked like Honda would also only want to offer a front-facing radar system, but new patent drawings now show work on a system at the rear as well. As it stands, however, it will only be designed for the Gold Wing Tour, which is equipped with TopCase, as the system will also be installed in it.
Concealed mounting
It is not yet clear whether Honda will also use the Bosch radar system or develop its own. In contrast to other manufacturers who have purchased the system from Bosch, Honda does not want to install it in a visible position. At Honda, it is to be mounted behind the fairing.
Since radar beams can penetrate the fairing, this does not pose a problem. However, angled fairing parts or vibrations could be problematic. For these reasons, the other manufacturers have so far mounted the radar sensor in an openly visible position.
