CFMoto and Pierer Mobility part ways: sales future in Germany uncertain

The cooperation between Pierer Mobility AG and the Chinese motorcycle manufacturer CFMoto is coming to an end: On May 31, 2025, the official distribution of CFMoto motorcycles in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and Great Britain by the KTM parent company will end.  Pierer Mobility had only taken over distribution in 2023 – now, just over two years later, the separation comes as a surprise.  The succession plan for sales has so far remained open, fueling speculation about the future of CFMoto in the DACH region.

Two scenarios for sales from June 2025

Until now, the distribution of CFMoto models in Germany has been handled centrally by Pierer Mobility AG.  This is set to change from June 1, 2025.  It remains to be seen whether CFMoto will take over direct sales itself in the future or once again rely on an independent importer.  In the past – before the takeover by Pierer Mobility – the Austrian KSR Group, for example, was responsible for sales.

Direct sales by CFMoto itself could bring advantages for dealers and customers, for example through faster supply chains or more direct communication.  On the other hand, a new external partner is also possible.  For end customers with an existing dealer contact, little is likely to change in the short term – however, new opportunities could arise in the medium term: rumors are circulating that long-awaited models such as the CFMoto 450 MT or the new 675 could finally find their way onto the German market.

Supply bottlenecks and model availability

According to information from MOTORRAD, there have been significant delivery bottlenecks for CFMoto models in Germany for several weeks.  These bottlenecks particularly affect countries in which Pierer Mobility AG is responsible for sales.  In markets outside this sphere of influence, supplies appear to be stable.  This raises hopes that a change in the sales structure could also lead to an improvement in availability.

Technical cooperation with KTM remains in place

Regardless of the dissolution of the sales cooperation, the technical cooperation between CFMoto and KTM will continue.  This has been in place since 2009 and, according to Chinese sources, will continue in the usual depth.  Among other things, both manufacturers cooperate in the development of engines and vehicle platforms.  The Austrian design studio Kiska is also regularly involved.

As part of the global optimization of development resources, Pierer Mobility relocated around 300 research and development jobs from Mattighofen to CFMoto in China and Bajaj in India at the end of 2023.  This measure points to long-term strategic cooperation between the partners – regardless of organizational changes in sales.

Looking back: The rise of CFMoto

CFMoto was founded in 1989 by the Lai brothers – initially as a parts supplier.  The company has been producing its own engines since 1996 and complete motorcycles since 2000.  ATVs (all-terrain vehicles) were added in 2004.  Today, CFMoto operates a state-of-the-art production facility with over 200,000 square meters of space.  The company holds more than 100 patents and has developed over 100 different models worldwide, which are exported to over 70 countries.

Since the cooperation with KTM, CFMoto has also taken over the distribution of all KTM models on the Chinese market – proof of the trust and strategic relevance of this partnership.

Conclusion

The announcement that the sales partnership between CFMoto and Pierer Mobility will come to an end on May 31, 2025 leaves many questions unanswered.  It is not yet clear whether CFMoto will serve the German market on its own or via a new importer.  One thing is certain, however: the technical cooperation with KTM will remain in place and little is likely to change for customers initially.  In the long term, however, the change in distribution could provide new impetus for model diversity and availability.
