- New four-cylinder engine with 502 cm³ displacement
- Three color options for the CBR500R FOUR in China
- Market launch in Japan reportedly possible from 2026
Honda presented a new mid-range sports model with a four-cylinder engine at the Chongqing Motorcycle Show in the fall. We are talking about the CBR500R FOUR, which was officially unveiled there for the first time. The color options for the model have now also been released in China. These details are once again attracting attention, as expectations are growing in Japan that an adapted version could be released as the CBR400R FOUR.
Three colors for the CBR500R FOUR
The CBR500R FOUR will be available in three colors for the Chinese market. The choices are Satin Silver, Lava Red, and Night Black. The color names have been adapted to international designations. It is striking that the graphic accents differ depending on the color. In contrast to the CB500 SUPER FOUR with Spencer color scheme, the fully faired version uses its own design lines.
The colors were presented after the actual model announcement and provide the first concrete indications of how close to series production the CBR500R FOUR already is. Price, market launch, and final specifications have still not been communicated.
Chassis and equipment
However, based on the information and images released so far, some technical details can be discerned. The CBR500R FOUR uses a chassis with Pro Link linkage and a central shock absorber at the rear. An upside-down fork is used at the front, which, according to the images, is said to be from KYB. The swing arm appears to be an aluminum component, but official confirmation of this is still pending.
Braking is provided by a dual disc system at the front. The tires are from CST in Taiwan and measure 120/70ZR17 at the front and 160/60ZR17 at the rear. These dimensions clearly indicate a sporty design.

New four-cylinder engine with E Clutch
At the heart of the model is a newly developed inline four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 502 cm³. The engine was designed from the outset to integrate the Honda E Clutch. The system is located on the left side of the engine and operates the clutch via an actuator and pushrod mechanism. This should make it possible to start and shift gears without manual clutch operation.
A bidirectional quickshifter is also provided. Throttle response is controlled by an electronic ride-by-wire system. The internal architecture of the engine uses a triangular arrangement of the main shafts, which differs fundamentally from older Honda designs such as the earlier CB400 Super Four engine.
Performance data has not yet been published. Accordingly, neither horsepower nor kW specifications can be reliably stated.
Modern electronics and design
Standard equipment is said to include a 5-inch TFT display that is compatible with Honda RoadSync. All lighting is based on LED technology. The front design is reminiscent of earlier Honda sport tourers, while the rear has a more modern look with a clearly defined taillight and multi-layer seat cover.
According to the photos, the rear shock absorber has adjustable spring preload. Again, there is no official technical description to confirm this definitively.

Significance for Japan and the CBR400R FOUR
Parallel to the CBR500R FOUR, a trademark application for the name CBR400R FOUR was announced in Japan. Industry observers assume that Honda could adapt the concept for the domestic market to the local driver’s license class. A first public appearance is reportedly expected in spring 2026 at the Japanese motorcycle shows. An official presentation in the summer of the same year is considered likely, but has not been confirmed.
Whether and in what form the CBR400R FOUR will actually appear remains to be seen. However, the color variants of the CBR500R FOUR now on display send a clear signal that Honda is actively preparing the new four-cylinder platform and could gradually roll it out in various markets.
What does this mean for me as a motorcyclist?
The introduction of the CBR500R FOUR and the hints at a possible CBR400R FOUR show that Honda wants to re-establish a stronger presence in the mid-size sports motorcycle segment with four-cylinder engines. For me as a motorcyclist, this means above all a wider selection of modern, fully faired sports models below the large displacement classes. A compact four-cylinder engine with the latest electronics such as E Clutch, Quickshifter, and TFT display will appeal in particular to riders who want to combine classic engine characteristics with contemporary technology. At the same time, the platform strategy suggests that ease of maintenance, everyday usability, and moderate performance levels will play a greater role than pure peak values. This could result in a motorcycle that offers sporty design and technology without crossing the threshold into pure high-performance models.
