MotoGP: Introduction of radio communication from 2025

From the 2025 season, MotoGP plans to open a new chapter in communication technology: a one-way radio communication system will be introduced between race control and the riders.  The system was tested for the first time this year after the MotoGP race in Jerez and, according to Dorna, the organizer of MotoGP, will be implemented in several stages.

Test runs and gradual introduction

The introduction of the new radio system is to take place in stages.  In the first phase, which is scheduled for 2025, the new race director Simon Crafar will be the only person allowed to communicate with the riders via radio.  The messages should always be short and to the point so as not to distract the drivers or jeopardize safety on the track.

A meeting before the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix took the plans a step further.  The drivers were informed about the details of the new system and it is expected that by 2026 it could also be possible to introduce two-way communication between drivers and race control, similar to what has been the case in Formula 1 for years.

The discussion about two-way communication

While many Formula 1 fans appreciate the entertaining aspect of radio messages between riders and teams, the introduction of two-way communication is the subject of controversy in MotoGP.  Some riders are in favor of the system, while others express reservations.

Among the supporters is Aleix Espargaro, who has been arguing for the introduction of radio technology for several years.  “We have been working on it for three years, especially to improve communication in the event of accidents,” explained Espargaro.  He also emphasized that the technical implementation was not easy, especially due to GPS-based challenges.

Criticism of the convenience of the system

While Espargaro is in favor of the wireless technology, there are also critical voices.  Reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia expressed concerns about the comfort of the system.  During the test after the Misano race, he complained that the radio device installed in the helmet felt uncomfortable after a short time.  In an interview with GPOne, he explained: “I think I’ll get penalties every race like Michael Jordan,” referring to the NBA star, who regularly received penalties due to his choice of footwear.  “The system puts pressure on an area of the bone that hurts after just 30 seconds.  How are you supposed to put up with that for an entire race?”

A look into the future

Despite the criticism, Espargaro is convinced that the new system will enrich MotoGP.  “At some tracks, it will be difficult to communicate during the race, but you have to get used to new technologies,” he says.  In his opinion, the system could not only increase safety, but also improve the racing experience for spectators.

The long-term plans go even further: in the final phase of implementation, drivers could be able to communicate directly with their teams to coordinate strategic decisions during the race.  This would be a further step towards the interactivity that has long been standard in Formula 1.  However, an exact date for this third phase has not yet been set.

Conclusion

With the planned introduction of radio communication in 2025, MotoGP is breaking new ground and moving closer to technological standards that are already established in other racing series.  However, the opinions of the riders are divided: While some recognize the potential of the new technology, technical challenges and comfort issues in particular are met with criticism.  It remains to be seen how the system will ultimately affect the racing action.
