The history: 40 years of GSX-R – milestones of an icon

Since 1985, the abbreviation GSX-R has stood for sporty performance, innovation, and numerous racing victories worldwide. The GSX-R1000, on the market since 2001, has established itself as synonymous with uncompromising sportiness and reliability with 15 FIM Endurance World Championship titles, countless successes in Superbike and Superstock, and a large fan base. Suzuki honors this heritage with the “40th Anniversary Edition,” which combines the best of four decades of GSX-R in terms of technology, appearance, and equipment.

Engine: Euro 5 Plus four-cylinder with 195 hp – technology from racing

At the heart of the anniversary GSX-R is a newly developed, Euro 5 Plus-compliant inline four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 999.8 cm³. The peak power output is 143.5 kW (195 hp) at 13,200 rpm, and the maximum torque is 110 Nm at 11,000 rpm. This makes the Suzuki GSX-R1000R one of the most powerful motorcycles in its class.

Important engine features at a glance:

  • Liquid-cooled DOHC inline four-cylinder engine
  • Bore x stroke: 76.0 mm x 55.1 mm
  • Compression ratio: 13.8:1
  • Maximum power: 143.5 kW (195 hp) at 13,200 rpm
  • Maximum torque: 110 Nm at 11,000 rpm
  • Maximum speed: over 14,000 rpm possible

Racing technology for the road:

  • Suzuki Racing Variable Valve Timing (SR-VVT):

A centrifugal variable valve timing system in the intake camshaft optimizes filling across the entire speed range. This provides maximum power at high speeds without compromising performance in the lower and middle ranges.

  • Suzuki Finger Follower Valve Train System:

F1-inspired finger followers instead of classic cup tappets enable higher revs and precise valve control. All fingers are DLC-coated for minimized wear.

  • Suzuki Top Feed Injectors (S-TFI):

In addition to the primary eight-hole injectors, four additional S-TFI injectors in the airbox area ensure optimum mixture preparation and maximum combustion efficiency at high speeds.

  • Lightweight pistons and connecting rods:

Forged aluminum pistons with DLC-coated pins and specially machined connecting rods ensure durability and minimized friction. Optimized cooling and improved cylinder head shape ensure maximum efficiency.

  • New crankshaft and crankcase design:

The crankshaft has thicker bearing journals (37 mm instead of the previous 35 mm) for increased load capacity. Cutouts in the cylinder bores reduce pumping losses.

  • Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS):

An anti-hopping clutch makes downshifting easier and prevents the rear wheel from locking up during aggressive braking. The operating forces are low, which makes everyday riding easier.

  • 4-2-1 titanium exhaust system:

The rear silencer is made of shot-blasted titanium. The large-volume elliptical catalytic converter and two O2 sensors ensure compliance with the Euro 5 Plus standard. The system is lighter and more compact than its predecessor.

  • Electronic throttle valves (ride-by-wire):

Large, 48 mm wide throttle bodies allow precise control and meet current emissions standards.

Fuel consumption and emissions:

  • Fuel consumption (WMTC): 6.8 l/100 km
  • CO₂ emissions (WMTC): 158 g/km

Suspension and chassis: Lightweight, stable, and agile

The chassis of the Suzuki GSX-R1000R 40th Anniversary Edition features proven and optimized components from the world of racing.

  • Aluminum bridge frame:

The compact twin-spar frame is lightweight, rigid, and designed for maximum riding precision. The geometry enables quick changes of direction and stable handling even at the limits.

  • Braced aluminum swingarm:

A swingarm reinforced on both sides made of aluminum provides additional stability during heavy acceleration and in racing.

  • Lightweight six-spoke aluminum wheels:

The 6-spoke cast wheels are fitted with Bridgestone Battlax Racing Street RS11 tires (120/70ZR17 front, 190/55ZR17 rear). The tires offer high mileage and excellent grip.

  • Suspension:

The front features a fully adjustable USD upside-down fork, while the rear has a monoshock with progressive deflection.

  • Electronically controlled steering damper:

Automatically adjusts to speed and ensures stability at high speeds.

  • Brake system:

Radially mounted Brembo monoblock four-piston calipers at the front grip two 320 mm discs. At the rear, a single disc with a single-piston caliper provides deceleration. The system is equipped with hybrid floating mounts (T-Drive & pins) that reduce noise and weight.

  • ABS system (Motion Track Brake System):

Astemo’s lean-angle-dependent ABS is particularly light and compact, supporting the rider even when leaning and during rapid braking maneuvers.

  • Optional: Aerodynamic winglets

Dry carbon winglets, developed based on the Suzuka 8h racing machines, increase downforce and provide additional high-speed stability.

Electronics & Assistance Systems: Comprehensive S.I.R.S. for maximum control

The anniversary GSX-R1000R is equipped with the latest Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.). The system includes:

  • Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS):

Three selectable riding modes (A – Active, B – Basic, C – Comfort) that individually adjust power and throttle response.

  • Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS):

10-level traction control, can be switched off. Works in conjunction with IMU, wheel speed sensors, throttle position sensor, and gear position sensor.

  • Lift Limiter:

Limits unwanted front wheel lift during acceleration, promoting safe riding.

  • Roll Torque Control:

Reduces engine power depending on lean angle and speed to stabilize handling in corners.

  • Launch Control:

Simplifies race starts by automatically controlling engine speed and power, deactivates after shifting up to third gear.

  • Bidirectional Quickshifter:

Clutchless shifting both up and down, with automatic double-declutching when downshifting.

  • Motion Track Brake System:

ABS remains active even when leaning, preventing the bike from standing up when braking in corners.

  • Slope Dependent Control:

Prevents the rear wheel from lifting when braking on downhill sections.

  • Suzuki Easy Start System:

Engine starts at the push of a button, no need to pull the clutch as long as the bike is in neutral.

  • Low RPM Assist:

Prevents the engine from stalling when starting and maneuvering by automatically increasing the engine speed.

  • Bosch 6-axis IMU:

Detects all movements of the motorcycle and provides the basic data for all driving aids and assistance systems.

  • CAN bus system:

Modern data transmission reduces the wiring harness and ensures fast, reliable communication between all components.

Electrical equipment and instruments

  • HY battEliiy P-Series lithium-ion battery:

The battery developed by Eliiy Power is lighter and more compact than conventional batteries, extremely durable, and designed for temperatures from -10 °C to +65 °C. According to the manufacturer, it has a service life of up to 10 years.

  • Multifunction LCD instrument:

Easy-to-read LCD display with information on speed, RPM, gear, quickshifter status, driving mode, traction control level, fuel level, temperature, on-board voltage, consumption, service intervals, and much more. All warning and indicator lights are also clearly arranged.

  • Lighting:

Bright, narrow LED headlights (low/high beam above each other), LED position lights, slim LED turn signals at the front and rear, and a vertically arranged LED taillight.

Design and colors: Modern aerodynamics meets retro charm

  • Form follows function:

The slim, streamlined bodywork was developed in the wind tunnel and on the racetrack. Large SRAD air intakes centrally located at the front, low-slung fairing, optional winglets, and a compact rear end ensure maximum aerodynamics and a sporty appearance.

  • Anniversary logos and graphic details:

Special emblems and stickers on the tank, sides, seat, and rear silencer underscore the exclusivity of the “40th Anniversary Edition.”

  • Color options (each with anniversary graphics):
    • Pearl Vigor Blue / Pearl Tech White (C6F)
    • Candy Daring Red / Pearl Tech White (C7Q)
    • Pearl Ignite Yellow / Metallic Mat Stellar Blue (C7P)
  • Additional features:

Magneto and clutch covers in gray, gold anodized brake calipers, black fuel cap, embossed GSX-R logo on the seat, and a custom-designed ignition key with anniversary logo.
