- Production helmet with integrated head-up display and augmented reality functions
- Collaboration between Shoei and EyeLights
- Price: around €1,041 (approx. $1,199)
After years of numerous announcements and prototypes, augmented reality technology is now finding its way into the series production of motorcycle helmets. With the GT-Air 3 Smart, Shoei combines its well-known full-face helmet platform with the third generation of HUD technology from EyeLights. The aim is to display relevant information directly in the field of vision and keep the rider’s eyes on the road.

Head-up display directly in the field of vision
At the heart of the GT-Air 3 Smart is an integrated nano-OLED head-up display with full HD resolution. This projects information such as speed, navigation instructions, incoming calls, or system messages at a distance of around three meters in front of the driver. According to EyeLights, this type of display reduces reaction time by more than 32 percent, as the rider does not have to switch their gaze between the road and the instruments or smartphone. Readability is also guaranteed in direct sunlight.
Technology and range of functions
In addition to the visual display, the helmet offers a fully integrated communication system. This includes a universal intercom, which, according to the manufacturer, is compatible with systems from other brands. The connection can be used both online and offline in mesh mode. The audio kit includes a microphone with active noise cancellation and support for popular voice assistants. EyeLights specifies the battery life as over ten hours. All electronic components are permanently installed in the helmet; no additional attachments are required.

Helmet construction and safety
The well-known GT-Air 3 serves as the basis. The helmet shell is made of Shoei’s Advanced Integrated Matrix, a multi-layer composite material designed to provide stability and comparatively low weight. Features also include an integrated QSV-2 sun visor and a CNS-1C outer visor. A defogger system with adjustable air intakes is designed to improve ventilation and visibility. No information was provided on weight or additional certifications beyond the standard equipment.
Presentation at EICMA and classification
The GT-Air 3 Smart was unveiled to the public for the first time at EICMA in Milan. At the same time, EyeLights also presented a production motorcycle with integrated HUD technology. With this double presentation, the company claims to be the first to equip both a production helmet and a production motorcycle with the corresponding technology. EyeLights itself was founded in Toulouse in 2016 and developed head-up displays for motorcycles based on aviation technology at an early stage.

Price and market position
The GT-Air 3 Smart is expected to be priced at around €1,041 (approx. $1,199), which is significantly higher than the standard version of the GT-Air 3. Compared to other HUD helmets that have been announced, Shoei is positioning itself in the upper price segment. Its unique selling point is the complete integration of the display into an established series helmet without external modules.
