Harvard presents tear-resistant natural rubber: New opportunities for motorcycles and more

Rubber is a key material in vehicle construction. Whether tires, bushings, seals, or handles—almost every motorcycle part requires elastic components that must withstand heavy loads in everyday use. The problem: Over time, aging and stress cause cracks to form, which can lead to the failure of individual components. This is a known weak point, especially for frequently used parts such as hoses, chassis seals, and rubber bearings.

Harvard research: The creation of “Tanglemer”

Scientists at the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University have now developed a novel approach to improving natural rubber. Instead of shortening the polymer chains of the rubber during production, as was previously the case, they are retained in their entirety and interwoven with each other. The result is a network of long, elastic chains – called “tanglemer” – that efficiently distributes mechanical stress and inhibits the growth of cracks.

Significantly improved material properties

The lab tests are promising: the new rubber material showed four times higher resistance to slow crack growth and a tenfold increase in overall strength compared to conventional natural rubber. This is especially interesting for parts that are under constant stress and exposed to high mechanical loads.

Applications in the motorcycle sector

The new material opens up numerous possibilities in the motorcycle sector. Currently, the manufacturing process is particularly suitable for thin-walled components. This could make hoses for off-road motorcycles, rim strips, or special inserts more durable and robust, for example. Another area of application is seals on chassis components such as forks, where even the smallest cracks or damage can cause the component to fail.

Handles, rubber pads, and gloves could also become more resistant thanks to the new technology. This is particularly beneficial for frequent riders and sporty motorcyclists who depend on durability and reliability.

Challenges and outlook

The technology is still in its early stages. Production currently relies on water-based processes, which are not practical for thick-walled components such as tires or engine mounts. However, the first products for use in thinner components could soon be on the market.

In the long term, the development has potential for the entire mobility sector. If the manufacturing processes can be scaled up, motorcycles, cars, and powersport vehicles could become significantly lower maintenance. Especially in off-road and racing, where material failure can have serious consequences, a significantly more robust rubber would offer real added value.
