While Dunlop is riding the tried-and-tested Paton and Hickman is consistently developing the Yamaha R7, Todd is bringing a new combination into the race with the Padgett’s team that has the potential to break up the established duel.
Supertwin: less power, more precision
With an engine output of well under half that of a superbike – that’s around 75-85 hp (55-63 kW) compared to over 240 hp (177 kW) – the Supertwins may lack sheer power, but the riding demands are no less high. Aerodynamics, speed through the bends and the ability to drive three flawless laps at the highest level are what count here. The demands are merciless – and that is precisely what makes this class so fascinating.
Paton as a reference – Yamaha and Aprilia are catching up
Since 2017, the Italian brand Paton has been the benchmark in the Supertwin class. It has won seven of the last eight TT races. However, the introduction of the Yamaha R7 and the Aprilia RS660 has brought a breath of fresh air into the class. While Dunlop continues to rely on the proven Paton, Hickman has opted for a different approach.
With the opening of the regulations, the TT record lap holder immediately opted for the Yamaha R7 – a project that he is running together with his own company PHR Performance and in cooperation with Swan Racing. Initially ridiculed, Hickman achieved a fourth place in the first race with the R7 in 2023. However, his second victory in the class followed just a few days later. His personal best time of 121.743 mph (around 195.92 km/h) clearly shows that the R7 is competitive.
The review: Dunlop vs. Hickman
Michael Dunlop made a serious return to the Supertwin class in 2017, starting with a disappointing seventh place on a Kawasaki. However, the switch to the Paton the following year changed everything: Dunlop rode to victory in 2018 – with a record lap of 122.750 mph (197.57 km/h) that still stands today.
2022 saw the first real showdown with Peter Hickman – also on a Paton at the time. For two laps, the two drivers engaged in a thrilling race until Dunlop had to retire due to a technical defect at Glen Helen. Since then, the duel has defined the class.
Davey Todd: The challenger
Davey Todd, who has already attracted attention in various TT classes in the past, joins the renowned Padgett’s team in 2025. After finishing sixth twice in 2024 on a Dafabet Racing Kawasaki, he later commented that the bike’s potential was not fully exploited – lack of practice time was the main problem.
For 2025, Todd is on a Paton prepared by Padgett’s. Despite their debut in the Supertwin category, the team brings extensive experience from other TT classes. Todd, whose light and aerodynamic riding style is considered ideal for these machines, could well spring a surprise.
Conclusion: Exciting three-way constellation with an open outcome
Although Dunlop and Hickman are considered the favorites thanks to their previous successes, Davey Todd and other challengers could quickly turn the tide. The Supertwin class is known for its unpredictability – technical failures, minor errors and sudden changes in the weather can turn any race on its head.
One thing is clear: the Tourist Trophy 2025 will once again be a highlight in the Supertwin class – characterized by exciting duels, new brands and a lot of tactical sensitivity.
