What can the new V16 warning light do?
The V16 warning light is not a simple flashing light. It has an integrated eSIM that automatically transmits location data to the DGT 3.0 digital platform every 100 seconds in the event of a breakdown or accident. This platform in turn informs emergency services, traffic control centers and networked vehicles of what has happened.
According to DGT, no personal data or vehicle-specific information is passed on. The focus is solely on forwarding the hazard report and its precise position.
Another plus point is visibility: the light with orange LEDs placed on the vehicle roof is visible even from up to one kilometer away and therefore offers a considerable safety advantage – especially in the dark or in poor visibility.
Technical requirements for the V16 warning light
The DGT has clear specifications for the V16 lights, which may be used from 2026. Only devices with official certification from the authority are permitted. The prescribed technical specifications include
- 360° field of vision thanks to orange LEDs
- Flashing pattern and light intensity in accordance with legal standard
- Secure attachment to the vehicle roof using a magnetic base – alternatively, the light must be attached to the driver’s door
- eSIM function with active network connection and guaranteed function for at least twelve years
- At least IP54 protection class (dust and splash-proof)
- Power supply via battery or rechargeable battery, with at least 18 months of operational readiness
Such lamps may already be used in Spain as a replacement for the warning triangle, but the mandatory version with eSIM will not apply until 2026.
Where does the V16 obligation apply?
The new regulation only applies to freeways and dual carriageways in Spain. The warning triangle may still be used on inner-city roads and rural roads. However, from 2026, anyone driving on dual carriageways or freeways without a certified V16 warning light must expect a fine of 80 euros (approx. 87 US dollars).
Who is affected by the obligation?
The obligation to carry a V16 light applies exclusively to vehicles with Spanish registration. Foreign vehicles, such as German cars or tourist motorhomes, are exempt from the regulation.
The situation is different for rental cars: Anyone renting a vehicle with a Spanish license plate in Spain must ensure that the V16 light is on board. We strongly recommend checking this when you pick up the vehicle.
