Pirelli to take over tire supply for MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 from 2027

From the 2027 season, Pirelli will be the sole tire supplier for the MotoGP World Championship and the two junior classes Moto2 and Moto3.  The Italian manufacturer has signed an agreement with Dorna Sports, the organizer of the championship, which will be valid up to and including 2031.  This marks the end of the era of Michelin in the premier class, which has provided the exclusive tires for MotoGP since 2016.

Pirelli has been supplying Moto2 and Moto3 with tires since 2024, having previously used Dunlop tires.  With the new agreement, Pirelli is now extending its commitment to the entire MotoGP World Championship.  In addition, the all-electric MotoE racing series will also switch to Pirelli tires.

Change linked to far-reaching rule changes

The timing of the switch coincides with a comprehensive revision of the technical regulations.  From 2027, the displacement of MotoGP bikes will be reduced from the current 1000 cm³ to 850 cm³.  In addition, ride-height devices are to be removed and the aerodynamic add-on parts reduced in size.  These measures are intended to slow down the motorcycles and ensure greater safety on the current race tracks.

These rule changes mean that Pirelli is not faced with the challenge of being directly compared with the previous Michelin tires.  Instead, the new tires will be developed for the revised machines right from the start.

Pirelli strengthens its presence in motorsport

By taking over the tire supply for the MotoGP, Pirelli is taking a further step towards positioning itself as a leading manufacturer in international motorsport.  The company has already been supplying the tires for the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) for many years.  Pirelli is also the official tire supplier for Formula 1, which means that the Italians are now represented in both the top motorcycle and automobile racing series.

While Pirelli is establishing itself in the most important racing series, Michelin will remain the exclusive tire supplier for MotoGP and MotoE until the end of 2026.  From 2027, the company will no longer be represented in these areas.

Reactions to the change

Opinions on the change of manufacturer in MotoGP are mixed.  There have already been discussions about different tire suppliers in the past.  When Bridgestone replaced Michelin, there were voices calling for Michelin’s return.  Conversely, it was the same when Michelin came back into MotoGP.  It remains to be seen how the riders, teams and fans will react to the change and whether Pirelli might face similar criticism to Michelin in recent years.

Michelin has repeatedly faced public criticism in recent years, particularly in connection with tire pressure problems.  As a result, drivers and teams have only been able to comment on this issue to a limited extent.  With the switch to Pirelli, it remains to be seen whether these debates will come to an end or whether tires will remain a much-discussed topic in MotoGP.
