The decision is based on an internal circular to US dealers. In the meantime, an official recall has also been registered with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The warning is clear: “Urgent – Do not drive this vehicle”.
Technical background: problems with the crankshaft bearing
According to Kawasaki, there is a risk of engine damage due to an incorrectly fitted crankshaft bearing, specifically bearing bush number 5. The reason for this is excessive tightening torque during assembly, which impairs the necessary clearance for the lubricating film. This can lead to seizure of the plain bearing – with far-reaching consequences.
In the worst case, there is a risk of a sudden loss of power, engine stalling or even engine blocking while riding. Particularly critical: The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R is equipped with a high-revving 636 cubic inch in-line four-cylinder engine which, according to the factory specification, delivers 124 hp (91 kW) at 13,000 rpm – with Ram-Air even up to 129 hp (95 kW). With such performance values, a failure can have serious consequences.
Measures in the USA
In the USA, an immediate sales ban has been issued for all affected models. Dealers are no longer allowed to sell new or used vehicles built between 2023 and 2025. A driving ban applies to already registered vehicles until a technical solution is available. Kawasaki Motors USA is currently preparing a written notification to owners.
US dealers have also been instructed to initiate repairs to the affected components as quickly as possible as soon as spare parts and repair instructions are available.
Europe not yet affected – KBA without entry
The situation in Germany and Europe is currently different. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) does not currently list a recall for the Ninja ZX-6R. Kawasaki Germany confirmed on June 10, 2025 that it had been informed of the US measure. No announcement has yet been made for Europe.
However, vehicle owners in Europe can use the KTISC (Kawasaki Technical Information System for Customers) platform with their chassis number to check whether there is a recall for their motorcycle. If no recall is displayed there, there is currently no need for action.
Conclusion: Wait and check the VIN
While driving bans and recalls are already in effect in the USA, the situation in Europe remains calm for the time being. Nevertheless, owners of a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R of the above-mentioned model years should remain vigilant and regularly use the VIN query. An extension of the measure to Europe cannot be ruled out if the problem proves to be widespread worldwide.
