OMOWAY OMO X: This Electric Scooter Balances Itself

Startup OMOWAY has unveiled the OMO X, claiming it is the first self-balancing electric scooter in mass production. Space technology is supposed to keep the two-wheeler upright even while stationary.
  • Self-balancing electric scooter with gyroscope technology from the space industry
  • Pre-orders starting late April 2026 in Indonesia, market launch in May
  • Modular design enables three different vehicle configurations

A two-wheeler that cannot fall over. What sounds like a utopia, Singaporean technology company OMOWAY now intends to bring to series production. At an event held at Jewel Changi Airport in Singapore, the startup presented its OMO X and simultaneously announced the official start of mass production. OMOWAY itself describes the vehicle as “the world’s first self-balancing electric motorcycle in mass production”. A closer look at the OMO X, however, reveals that in its basic configuration it is an electric scooter with a step-through design. The manufacturer obviously uses the term “motorcycle” deliberately to elevate the vehicle’s status. In fact, the OMO X offers a modular concept that enables three different configurations through interchangeable body panels: a classic step-through scooter, a street version, and a touring variant with luggage options.

Space Technology Keeps the Scooter Upright

The centrepiece of the OMO X is the so-called “OMO-ROBOT” architecture. This is a system of sensors, software and hardware designed to turn the scooter into a “two-wheeled robot”, as OMOWAY puts it. Cameras and sensors capture the surroundings, high-performance processors crunch the data, and a physical stabilisation system maintains balance. The crucial hardware component is a Control Moment Gyroscope, or CMG. Such gyroscope systems are normally used in space, for instance to keep satellites stable in orbit. The principle is based on conservation of angular momentum: a rapidly spinning gyroscope actively compensates for tilting movements and keeps the vehicle upright even when stationary or travelling at extremely low speeds. In a demonstration video, the OMO X balanced without a rider on a large seesaw, maintaining not only its own balance but also that of the entire construction.

In practice, this technology is primarily intended to solve one problem: the fear of tipping over. Especially for beginners or lighter riders, a heavy two-wheeler can be a real challenge at a standstill or at walking speed. A scooter that stabilises itself could significantly lower this barrier to entry.

HALO Pilot: More Than Just Balance

Beyond pure self-balancing, the OMO X features a system called HALO Pilot. This combines camera-based environmental awareness with stabilisation technology and is intended to offer functions previously seen mainly in the automotive sector. According to OMOWAY, these include adaptive cruise control, a one-button parking function and a summon feature that allows the scooter to drive itself to the rider. Added to this is what OMOWAY describes as “full active safety”. The system is designed to prevent skidding on wet roads, assist in corners and react to sudden obstacles within milliseconds. Cameras around the vehicle monitor the surroundings in all directions, warn of vehicles in the blind spot and are intended to initiate emergency braking automatically if the rider becomes distracted. The system is controlled via a 10.25-inch display in the cockpit. The OMO X also features a digital key, vehicle-to-vehicle communication and wireless charging. The scooter doesn’t need to be connected with a cable — it simply parks over a compatible charging pad.

Three Vehicles in One

One of the most unusual features of the OMO X is its modular concept. Interchangeable body panels allow the vehicle to be converted into three different configurations. In scooter mode, it’s a classic step-through. In street mode, additional panels close the open area between handlebars and seat, creating a sportier appearance. For GT mode, a luggage rack and side cases transform the scooter into a touring variant. Depending on the selected mode, the OMO X also adjusts its gyroscope settings to accommodate the changed weight distribution and expected speeds, according to OMOWAY. The cloud-based system is also said to be capable of learning regularly travelled routes and adapting stabilisation proactively. In terms of design, OMOWAY has opted for a futuristic look. Instead of conventional headlights, a continuous light strip runs around the front of the vehicle, which the manufacturer calls “Saberlights”. The vehicle was aerodynamically optimised in a wind tunnel, which OMOWAY says reduced air resistance by 23 percent and improved efficiency by 12 percent. Before its market launch, the OMO X was awarded the iF Design Award 2026.

Who Is Behind OMOWAY?

The company is headquartered in Singapore and was founded by a co-founder of Chinese electric car manufacturer XPeng. Development takes place in Guangzhou, China, while production is based in Jakarta. In January 2026, OMOWAY announced the completion of a Series A funding round. The amount was stated as “tens of millions of US dollars” without specifying an exact figure. Investors include Hui Capital, founded by a co-founder of Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD. OMOWAY describes itself as the “Tesla of motorcycles”, which is quite a stretch given the actual vehicle category. The ambitious self-description does, however, indicate where the journey is heading: not simply a scooter, but a new vehicle category that the company calls “MotoRobot”.

Honda and Yamaha Had the Idea First

Self-balancing two-wheelers are not an entirely new idea. Both Honda and Yamaha presented their own concept vehicles with similar technology at trade shows back in 2017. Honda showed the Riding Assist, Yamaha the MOTOROiD concept. Both prototypes could stand upright without a rider. However, these projects never progressed beyond technology demonstrator status. None of the major manufacturers has yet brought the technology to a production vehicle. Chinese company Da Vinci Motors also unveiled a self-balancing electric motorcycle in 2021, one that could even follow its rider autonomously. The vehicle was announced at around $27,500 but remains unavailable to this day. OMOWAY would therefore indeed be the first company to bring a self-balancing two-wheeler to series production, provided the announced plans proceed as intended.

Market Launch Initially Only in Indonesia

A worldwide sales launch will not happen for the time being. OMOWAY is initially focusing on Indonesia, one of the world’s largest two-wheeler markets. Pre-orders are scheduled to begin there in late April 2026, with the official market launch planned for late May in Jakarta. The company claims to already have dozens of local distributors under contract with decades of experience in the motorcycle industry. The dealer network is said to encompass more than 100 locations across key regions, including Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya and Bali. Southeast Asia as a whole is planned as the initial core market, with a global rollout to follow at a later date. Specific prices and complete technical specifications have not yet been published by OMOWAY. These are expected to be announced closer to the market launch. Earlier reports from last year cited a price estimate of around $3,800 (approximately €3,540), though whether this figure is still current remains unclear. Information on power output, battery capacity and range is also entirely absent so far.

Not Just a Scooter: OMOWAY Thinks Bigger

Alongside the OMO X, OMOWAY also presented the Mobility One at the Singapore event — a multipurpose robot on two wheels. The device uses the same balance and autonomy technology as the scooter and is intended for future deployment in logistics and service applications. The advantage over conventional four-wheeled delivery robots: thanks to its two-wheeled design, the Mobility One should also be able to navigate narrow alleys, doorways and even lifts. Founder Todd commented: “Only embodied intelligence can truly serve humanity.” OMOWAY’s long-term vision thus extends well beyond a single electric scooter. The company sees itself as a robotics firm developing two-wheeled platforms, not a conventional scooter manufacturer. Whether the OMO X delivers in everyday use what the impressive demonstrations promise remains to be seen once the first customers actually take the vehicle onto public roads. The challenges of real-world conditions — uneven surfaces, unpredictable traffic situations and sustained stress — can only be partially simulated in a controlled stage environment.
