Honda EV Outlier Concept – How Honda is rethinking electric motorcycles

With the EV Outlier Concept, Honda is presenting a radical study for the electric future of motorcycles at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. The focus is not on replacing the combustion engine, but on consciously redefining the riding experience.

  • Three key riding experiences: gliding, ecstasy, and low

With the EV Outlier Concept, Honda is pursuing an approach that differs significantly from familiar development paths. Instead of electrifying existing motorcycle concepts, the project was rethought from the ground up. The goal was to consistently exploit the possibilities of an electric drive and use them to develop a new vehicle category.

A concept without fixed boundaries

The term “Outlier” was chosen deliberately. Project manager Yuya Tsutsumi sees the concept as an outsider that does not adhere to existing categories or design rules. “The term ‘Outlier’ fits an object that does not submit to any boundaries,” explains Tsutsumi. “We want to show that Honda’s vision for electric motorcycles is not just about replacing combustion engines with electric power. It’s about the evolution of a vehicle type into a completely new category.”

The project structure is also unusual. Tsutsumi was responsible for the EV Outlier Concept from the initial idea to its implementation. This allowed classic development processes to be deliberately broken down. The starting point was not a familiar motorcycle layout, but the question of what characteristics are possible exclusively through electrification.

Waigaya as a creative engine

Despite its experimental nature, the development process remained deeply rooted in Honda’s corporate culture. Designers from Japan and international studios worked together in an open Waigaya discussion culture. This informal exchange was intended to challenge entrenched ways of thinking and open up new perspectives.

“By exchanging perspectives across nationalities and disciplines, we learned from each other and created something that would have been unattainable using traditional methods,” says Tsutsumi. The result is a design that deliberately breaks away from familiar motorcycle proportions.

Three driving experiences as a guiding principle

In terms of design, the EV Outlier Concept ties in with Honda’s electric design philosophy, which is known as Precision of Intrinsic Design. For this project, however, the team defined three additional core elements that are intended to shape the driving experience.

Gliding

“Gliding” describes the quiet, smooth riding experience of an electric motorcycle. Acceleration, deceleration, and cornering should flow seamlessly into one another, creating an overall feeling of fluidity. The focus is on calmness and control rather than mechanical feedback.

Ecstasy

The calm gliding is contrasted by “ecstasy.” This refers to the immediate response of the drive and the powerful torque, which is intended to create a direct feeling of connection between rider and machine. Honda sees the interplay of these contrasting impressions as a key appeal of electric motorcycles.

Low

The third element is called “Low” and describes a particularly low seating position and a changed viewing angle. Lowering the seat height and rider position creates a new sense of space. Honda deliberately increased the volume in the front area to visually emphasize this posture. A shell-shaped backrest is designed to absorb acceleration forces and support a body-centered riding experience.

New approaches to ergonomics and operation

The interface between human and machine has also been reinterpreted. Classic mirrors are giving way to camera-based systems whose images are integrated into a wide cockpit. The aim is to provide a clear display while reducing visual distraction.

Among other things, the display screen visualizes lean angle and engine power in real time. Honda wants to use this to intensify the connection between rider and vehicle through information and feedback, not background noise. “We deliberately wanted to create new forms of interaction – innovative discoveries that inspire new experiences,” says Tsutsumi.

Design without role models

The development of the EV Outlier Concept was not without its difficulties. “We had difficulties with the proportions,” admits Tsutsumi. For motorcycles with combustion engines, there are established ideas of harmony and balance. With the Outlier, these standards had to be deliberately questioned in order to implement the electrical architecture and new seating positions in an attractive design.

The lack of clear reference models presented the team with challenges, but also opened up new possibilities. Honda combined experience from motorcycle construction, automotive development, robotics, and energy technology to test new materials and concepts.

Premiere and outlook

The Honda EV Outlier Concept celebrated its world premiere at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, where it attracted the attention of media representatives and visitors alike. “It embodies new, unique values of electric mobility,” explains Tsutsumi. “We wanted to surprise visitors and let them feel the enthusiasm that drives and accompanies this project.”

With the EV Outlier Concept, Honda is positioning itself not as a mere latecomer to electric mobility, but as an active innovator. The concept model is intended to show how electric motorcycles could be conceived beyond familiar categories in the future.
