Ducati’s V2 engine: end of the Superquadro, start of a new era

With the announcement of the Ducati Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition for fall 2024, an era seems to be coming to an end.  But while Ducati is saying goodbye to the last model of the Panigale V2 in its current form, there are many indications that the history of the V2 engine is far from over.  A completely new model is set to enter the stage in 2025 and continue the tradition of 90-degree V-twin engines.

Farewell to the Superquadro V2: a historic end

The Ducati Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition marks the end of an era in which V2 engines with a 90-degree cylinder angle, also known as L-twins, were symbolic for the Italian manufacturer.  These engines, paired with desmodromic valve control, have been a Ducati trademark for decades.  However, in the course of technical evolution and new market requirements, Ducati is saying goodbye to this specific generation of engines.

The Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition, which was presented in July 2024, is limited to 555 units and is traded as a collector’s item.  The special paint finish in red, white, black and gray was designed by Drudi Performance and even features an image of the engine mechanics on the fairing.  Under the hood is a 955 cubic centimetre Superquadro engine that delivers 155 hp at 10,750 rpm and a torque of 104 Nm at 9,000 rpm.

The future of the V2: What’s coming in 2025?

While the Superquadro V2 era is coming to an end, Ducati has already confirmed that the V2 engine will not disappear completely.  In an interview during World Ducati Week 2024, Giulio Fabbri, Ducati’s Head of Communications, explained that a new model with an advanced V2 engine is in the works.  This new motorcycle will be the first completely new model for 2025 and will continue the tradition of V2 engines in the Supersport class.

The technical details of this new model are not yet known, but it is expected that Ducati will stick to the proven V2 configuration in order to preserve the brand’s identity.  Compliance with current supersport regulations will also play a role, suggesting that the displacement size could remain in the range of the previous 955cc engine.

Conclusion: The V2 Panigale lives on

The introduction of the Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition marks the end of an era, but the future of the V2 engine at Ducati is secure.  A completely new model is set to enter the stage in 2025 and continue the tradition of 90-degree V-twin engines.  For Ducati enthusiasts, this means that the brand will continue to focus on its roots while pushing ahead with technological development.
