- First rollout of the Honda MotoGP prototype for 2027
- New 850cc engine and Pirelli tires in use
- Test takes place over two days in Sepang
With a view to the far-reaching technical changes in the 2027 MotoGP season, Honda is starting development of the new motorcycle early. The manufacturer is completing two private test days at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, where the new 850cc engine will be used under real conditions for the first time.
Early entry into the new MotoGP regulations
Honda is the second manufacturer after KTM to bring the new MotoGP prototype for the 2027 regulations onto the track. While KTM has already carried out its first rollout in Jerez, Honda is now using the Sepang International Circuit for its first comprehensive testing. Testing will take place over two days on Wednesday and Thursday.
From the 2027 season onwards, a completely revised set of technical regulations will come into force in MotoGP. The key point is the reduction in displacement from the current 1000 to 850 cubic centimeters. This will be supplemented by a significant restriction on aerodynamics, the elimination of ride height systems, and the mandatory use of 100 percent non-fossil fuel.
Pirelli to replace Michelin from 2027
One of the most significant changes concerns the tires. From 2027, Pirelli will take over the role of exclusive tire supplier in MotoGP, replacing Michelin. In return, the French manufacturer will switch to the Superbike World Championship.
Honda is also using the test in Sepang to try out the MotoGP tires developed by Pirelli for the first time. This gives the manufacturer a head start over Ducati, Aprilia, and Yamaha, who are not expected to start working with the new tires until 2026.
Separate development programs for 2026 and 2027
Parallel to its work on the new regulations, Honda is continuing to push ahead with the development of the motorcycle for the 2026 season. This project is currently being led by test rider Aleix Espargaro. At the same time, a second development strand for 2027 is now underway.
According to reports, a base motorcycle based on the 2026 model will be used for the test in Sepang. However, this has already been adapted to future specifications. It is to be equipped with reduced aerodynamics, without ride height systems, and with the new Pirelli tires. The new 850cc engine will be tested under race track conditions for the first time.
Nakagami takes on initial development work
Takaaki Nakagami will be doing the riding work for the first rollout of the 2027 motorcycle. The former MotoGP regular will act as test rider and will initially be responsible for the development of the new motorcycle.
Aleix Espargaro will remain focused on the 2026 project for the time being. In the middle of the 2026 season, he will then take over the development of the 2027 motorcycle when it has reached a more advanced stage.
Further tests with Pirelli planned
Pirelli offered manufacturers tire material and technical personnel at an early stage to facilitate preparations for their entry into MotoGP. So far, KTM and Honda have accepted this offer. Other manufacturers are expected to follow suit in February.
Pirelli is also planning two official tests for 2026 with motorcycles that comply with the 2027 regulations and the entire MotoGP field. These are expected to take place in June and September.
WorldSBK team also on site
In addition to the MotoGP test team, Honda’s WorldSBK team will also be represented in Sepang. However, this is not a race event. Only testing of parts and components with a test rider is permitted. Race motorcycles and regular regular riders may not be used.
